Rublev claims Gijón Open

Final day in Gijón.

2022 Gijón Open, an ATP 250 tournament, on Hard Indoor, in Gijón, Spain, 10-16 October 2022.

This is a new tournament on the ATP Tour calendar.

Final:

Andrey Rublev (1) v Sebastian Korda (USA)

Rublev won the only previous encounter between the pair - Miami Masters 1000 quarter final, 2021.

In this final, Rublev broke the Korda serve in the fourth game of set one, and saved a break point when serving in game seven to lead 5-2.
Korda was broken again when serving to stay in the set.
Rublev ahead 6-2

Through four games of set two, only three points were surrendered to serve.
However, in the fifth game, Rublev was forced to save a break point, thanks to some thoughtful shot making from Korda, including a drop shot which set up a cross court winner, and a lob forcing an error. Eventually serve was held.

Serving at 30-30:in the next game, Korda missed with a backhand. He saved the break point with a forehand winner.
Rublev gave himself another break chance after a great return, and the break came with another failed Korda backhand.
Rublev led 4-2.

The break was consolidated, leaving Rublev a game away from victory.
Korda served at 2-5 to stay in the match. He did.

Rublev served at 5-3 for the match.
Quickly to 40-0, all three match points disappeared with Rublev errors.
The top seed steadied, and he converted a fourth chance to win the match 6-2 6-3 and take the title.

This was title number four in 2022 for Andrey Rublev.
