Wimbledon - Ladies’ Singles Preview

Ash Barty is not there to defend her Wimbledon title, and top seed Iga Swiatek is the new dominant force in women’s tennis.

On the face of it, Iga is set to add the 2022 Wimbledon trophy to her fast growing collection, and the rest simply providing support to her starring role.

I’m not as convinced.

Sure, her path is not particularly onerous early on, and Swiatek should account for Yulia Putintseva (27) in the third round, and Jil Teichmann (18) or Barbora Krejcikova (13) in the round of sixteen.

Her quarter final opponent is seeded to be Jessica Pegula (8), but others could pop up, including 2017 Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza (9) (if you can excuse her patchy lead up form), and unseeded Grand Slam champions Sloane Stephens and Bianca Andreescu (the latter a Bad Homburg finalist at the weekend)

Who Swiatek may meet in the semi final is anyones guess.

The other quarter in the top half is led by Paula Badosa (4) and she’d be horrified to see Petra Kvitova (25) as a likely third round opponent.

Kvitova is a dual Wimbledon winner, and just won Eastbourne, to pose one of the big threats at SW19.

Badosa or Kvitova would probably have to face 2019 champion Simona Halep (16) in the round of sixteen, a daunting task.

The other half of this stacked quarter is headed by last year’s finalist Karolina Pliskova (4).

In that section is the biggest wildcard Serena Williams, and even without any singles tennis of late, her doubles match practice at Eastbourne could be enough to launch Serena into a third round clash with Pliskova.

Surviving that only presents more difficulty with a possible round of sixteen match up with either CoCo Gauff (11) or Amanda Anisimova (20), both in ideal form.

The top quarter of the bottom half features Ons Jabeur (3), a genuine chance to take the title. Jabeur recently won the grass court title in Berlin, beating Gauff in the semis, and Belinda Bencic in the final.

The draw has Jabeur most likely meeting last years semi finalist Angelique Kerber (15) in the round of sixteen.

The other section of this quarter has Danielle Collins (8) seeded to meet Emma Raducanu (10) in the fourth round.

Raducanu hasn’t won much of late, and she is drawn to possibly play unseeded Caroline Garcia in the second round. Garcia just defeated Andreescu to win the Bad Homburg title.

Anett Kontaveit (2) is heading the bottom quarter, and has no form to speak of. She hasn’t played since Roland Garros, where she lost her opening match, just as she did in Rome the tournament before.

If Kontaveit makes it to the third round, she may meet Anhelina Kalinina (29), an Eastbourne quarter finalist.

Harder still would be a round of sixteen clash with Beatriz Haddad Maia (23) who has won Nottingham and Birmingham and was runner up at Eastbourne, or Belinda Bencic (14), finalist in Berlin.

Maria Sakkari (5) won’t find it easy in the other part of the quarter, with a possible fourth round encounter with Jelena Ostapenko (12), finalist at Eastbourne.

Before that, the Greek number one would need to travel past Sorana Cirstea (26).semi finalist in Birmingham.

My predictions:

Quarter finals:

Iga Swiatek (1) v Garbiñe Muguruza (9)

Petra Kvitova (25) v CoCo Gauff (11)

Danielle Collins (7) v Ons Jabeur (3)

Jelena Ostapenko (12) v Beatriz Haddad Maia (23)

Semi finals:

Iga Swiatek (1) v Petra Kvitova (25)

Ons Jabeur (3) v Beatriz Haddad Maia (23)

Final:

Petra Kvitova (25) to defeat Ons Jabeur (3)

to win her third Wimbledon

Fritz wins 2nd Eastbourne title

Final day in Eastbourne.

2022 Rothesay International Eastbourne, an ATP 250 tournament, on Grassin Eastbourne, United Kingdom, 20-25 June 2022.

Defending champion:
Alex de Minaur (2) who defeated Lorenzo Sonego (3) 4-6 6-4 7-6(5)

Final:

Maxime Cressy (USA) v Taylor Fritz (3) (USA)

This would be the first ATP match between the pair.

Cressy served first and was broken.
He saved a break point in the fifth game to avoid a double break.
Serving at 2-4, Cressy double faulted, failed with a volley, double faulted again, then put another volley out of court to drop serve.
Fritz would serve for the set at 5-2.

No trouble. A backhand winner, an ace, and a forehand winner to seal the set for Fritz 6-2.

Set two was more a competition with no break chances and only one game going to deuce.
A tie break was needed to separate them.

Serving at 2-3, Fritz volleyed into the net, giving Cressy the advantage.
Things went with serve until Fritz was serving at 3-6, facing three set points.
He saved one with an ace.
Fritz then hit a forehand long and Cressy took the set 7-6(4).

The first five games of the decider were love games in favour of the server.
Game six began with two double faults from Cressy to break the cycle, but the danger was averted and 3–3 the result.

Serving at 5-6 and 15-30, Cressy played two clutch volleys to extract him from potential disaster and send the match into a tie break decider.

Cressy double faulted with his first serve in the breaker. Fritz led 2-0.
No more points against serve until Cressy served at 4-6, having just saved one match point.
Cressy mishit an overhead and the match was over.

Taylor Fritz won 6-2 6-7(4) 7-6(4) to claim his second Eastbourne title.

Tsitsipas wins Mallorca title

Final day in Mallorca.

2022 Mallorca Championships, an ATP 250 tournament, on Grassin Mallorca, Spain, 19-25 June 2022.

Defending champion:
Wildcard Daniil Medvedev (1) who defeated Sam Querrey 6-4 6-2

Final:

Roberto Bautista Agut (5) (Spain) v wildcard Stefanos Tsitsipas (2) (Greece)

Tsitsipas had won both of the two previous matches between the players.

The opening four games of set one were all won by Tsitsipas, and although Bautista Agut retrieved one of the breaks in game six, the gap was too big, and Tsitsipas served out the set 6-4.

Tsitsipas broke serve in game three of set two, and consolidated for 3-1.
Bautista Agut won the next five games to take the set 6-3 and square the match.

In the decider, Tsitsipas broke serve in the fourth game, and held in the fifth to lead 4-1.
He served for the match at 5-3, but was broken back.
Bautista Agut levelled at 5-5.

A tie break would ultimately decide the match.

Tsitsipas played an excellent tiebreaker to win the match 6-4 3-6 7-6(2) and collect his first grass court title.

Garcia wins Bad Homburg title

Final day in Bad Homburg.

2022 Bad Homburg Open presented by Engels & Voelkers, a WTA 250 tournament, on Grassin Bad Homburg, Germany, 19-25 June 2022.

Defending champion:
Angelique Kerber (4) who defeated Katerina Siniakova 6-3 6-2

Final:

Bianca Andreescu (Canada) v Caroline Garcia (France)

The final would be the first WTA clash between the players.

In set one, Garcia was the first to strike, breaking in game four.
Andreescu immediately broke back, and later saved four break points to level at 4-4.
A tie break was required,
After each player had a couple of mini breaks, it was on serve until at 5-6, Garcia lost the next point on her serve, and the set went to Andreescu 7-6(5).

No break points in set two until the sixth game where Andreescu converted and led 4-2.
Garcia, down a set and a break, fought back strongly, breaking the Andreescu serve twice, and taking the set 6-4.

In the decider, Garcia again was down a break, this time 0-2, but as in set two, broke the next two serves of Andreescu and held a 3-2 advantage.
The French player saved two break points before consolidating at 4-2, and there were no more chances for Andreescu after that.

Caroline Garcia served it out 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 to claim her first title since Nottingham in June 2019.

Kvitova wins Eastbourne title

Final day in Eastbourne.

2022 Rothesay International Eastbourne, a WTA 500 tournament, on Grassin Eastbourne, United Kingdom, 19-25 June 2022.

Defending champion:
Wildcard Jelena Ostapenko who defeated Anett Kontaveit 6-3 6-3

Final:

Petra Kvitova (14) (Czech Republic) v Jelena Ostapenko (8) (Latvia)

The eight previous contests between the players had been split 4-4, the most recent a win to Ostapenko in Dubai earlier this year.

In set one, Kvitova did not face a break point, in fact wasn’t taken to deuce.
Ostapenko, however, was broken in her first service game, and had to save break points in the next two.
Serving at 2-5, the defending champion saved two set points, but that only gave Kvitova the chance to deliver a love game to take the set 6-3.

In set two, Kvitova broke the Latvian serve in game three, then fought off five break points in the longest game of the match before holding for 3-1.
Another break left Kvitova ahead 4-1, and Ostapenko saved a match point when serving at 1-5.

Kvitova served out the match 6-3 6-2 to take her first Eastbourne title, and 29th overall in her illustrious career.

Wimbledon - Gentlemen’s Singles preview

Controversy surrounded this year’s Wimbledon well before talk of tennis balls being hit.

First, there was the ban placed on Russian and Belarusian players competing, a decision not taken by organisers of any of the other Grand Slam tournaments. I disagree with the ban.

Then in response, both the ATP and WTA decided to treat Wimbledon as a point free zone, meaning players would drop points gained from 2021, but not gain any from this year, irrespective of performance.

I disagree with this decision also.

However, that is done, and we still have a Grand Slam tournament up for grabs, the glory of winning remaining as it ever was.

This year, a number of seeded players do not present sufficient grass court credentials or form to realistically be a threat beyond a few rounds.

Top seed Novak Djokovic certainly does, and the six time Wimbledon winner (including the last three) should cruise through to the quarters again, probably knocking out fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic (25) and Reilly Opelka (15) on the way.

He is scheduled to meet Carlos Alcaraz (5) in the final eight, but the young gun is not as proven on grass, and he may find the likes of Oscar Otte (32) and Jannik Sinner (10), and even Andy Murray problematic.

Hubert Hurkacz (7) is flying in the lead up to Wimbledon, with a title win in Halle. His scalps there included Auger-Aliassime, Kyrgios, and Medvedev in the final.

Expect him to forge a significant path through the Wimbledon draw, and perhaps meet Cameron Norrie (9) in a round of sixteen tantaliser.

A quarter final is expected between Hurkacz and Casper Ruud (3), but Ruud losing his first round at Queen’s Club wasn’t ideal preparation.

The bottom half of the draw appears to be more interesting, at least with several players already displaying what it takes to negotiate the grass.

Matteo Berrettini (8) is seeded to make the quarters, and last year’s finalist has won tournaments in both Stuttgart and Queen’s Club as perfect warm up.

In his quarter, there are unseeded players, Jack Draper, who defeated Taylor Fritz at Queen’s Club, and made the semis at Eastbourne, and Benjamin Bonzi, who made the semis at Mallorca after defeating Denis Shapovalov.

Serious possible opponents in the Berrettini quarter include Roberto Bautista Agut (17), who is about to contest the final in Mallorca.

The seeded quarter final rival is Stefanos Tsitsipas (4), who is the other Mallorca finalist.

Don’t forget Nick Kyrgios, who could be a third round match up for Tsitsipas.

Rafael Nadal (2) sits at the bottom of the draw, and potentially faces 2017 Wimbledon finalist Marin Cilic (14) in the round of sixteen.

If he survives that, Felix Auger-Aliassime (6) is a likely quarter final hurdle.

However, Auger-Aliassime is no guarantee to make it there, as Taylor Fritz (11) could pose difficulties. Fritz is currently doing well at Eastbourne, about to contest the final.

Before that, the Canadian must win his opening clash with Maxime Cressy, who is the other Eastbourne finalist.

My predictions:

Quarter finals:

Novak Djokovic (1) v Carlos Alcaraz (5)

Casper Ruud (3) v Hubert Hurkacz (7)

Matteo Berrettini (8) v Stefanos Tsitsipas (4)

Felix Auger-Aliassime (6) v Rafael Nadal (2)

Matteo Berrettini (8) v Rafael Nadal (2)
