Berrettini successfully defends Queen’s Club

Final day in Queen’s Club.

2022 cinch Championships, an ATP 500 tournament, on Grassin London (Queen’s Club), United Kingdom, 13-19 June 2022.

Defending champion:
Matteo Berrettini (1) who defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4 6-7(5) 6-3

Final:

Filip Krajinovic (Serbia) v Matteo Berrettini (2) (Italy)

Berrettini won the two previous encounters between the players, most recently in Belgrade quarter finals April last year.

Berrettini had won six titles from nine finals before this one.
Krajinovic had lost all his previous four finals.

Krajinovic saved two break points in the opening game, and another in the third game.
He was finally broken in the fifth game, when from 40-15, the Serb hit a couple of unforced errors, was outdone at the net, and Berrettini finished with a winning volley.
After a period of excellence, Berrettini was immediately broken back, Krajinovic hit a backhand winner to set up one break point, but it was saved.
Another great backhand gave him a second chance, and it was converted with net brilliance.

No more breaks until the eleventh game. Serving at 5-5, Krajinovic led 30-15 before he missed with a backhand, was floored by an Italian backhand then netted a backhand to confirm he’d been broken.

Berrettini served out the set 7-5.

Serving at 2-2 in set two, Krajinovic netted a forehand, did likewise with a backhand, and saw Berrettini drop a winner over the net while he was standing almost in another county,
Three break points then for the second seed. Only one required as Krajinovic finished the game with a forehand disaster.

Berrettini held serve to extend his lead to 4-2.

Serving at 5-4 to win the match, Berrettini began with a forehand winner. The next Berrettini forehand hit the net. 15-15. A backhand failure from Berrettini and 15-30. A wonderful Italian volley and 30-30. A service winner gave Berrettini match point.
An ace sealed it 7-5 6-4, and Matteo Berrettini successfully defended his title.
Two titles in a week, and a perfect warm up for Wimbledon.
