ATP Cup

The 2022 ATP Tour begins with the ATP Cup in Australia.

2022 ATP Cup - an ATP team tournament, on Hard, in Sydney, Australia, 1-9 January 2022.

Defending  champion:
Russia which defeated Italy in the final in Melbourne in February 2021.

16 nations will compete in the tournament.

Initially, 15 nations qualified based on the ATP ranking of their #1 singles player, and host nation Australia was granted a wildcard.

On 1 December, Spain’s #1 Rafael Nadal, withdrew, but Spain remained qualified with their next best singles player Roberto Bautista Agut.

Austria initially qualified with Dominic Thiem. However, with his withdrawal, and that of Austria’s #2 Dennis Novak, Austria were withdrawn from the competition. The ATP Cup rules require at least one player to be ranked inside the top 250, and Austria now failed to meet this commitment.
Alternate team France took the place of Austria.

Novak Djokovic withdrew on 29 December, but as a ‘late withdrawal’, the ATP Cup rules allowed Serbia to remain in the competition. Rankings of other players in the team enabled this.

The teams were split into four groups of four. The four will play each other in round robin contests, and the winner of each group will be semi finalists.
Contests will consist of three matches - two singles and one doubles.

Semi finals will be:
Winner Group A v Winner Group D
Winner Group C v Winner Group B

Zverev dominant - wins ATP Finals

The 2021 ATP Finals - Day 7 - Final

2021 Nitto ATP Finals, on Hard Indoor, in Turin, Italy, 14-21 November 2021.

Defending champion:
Daniil Medvedev (4) who defeated Dominic Thiem (3) 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4

Final:

Daniil Medvedev (2) (Russia) v Alexander Zverev (3) (Germany)

Medvedev had won the past five of the meetings between the pair, to lead the head to head 6-5.
Three of those wins were this year, and one in the round robin stage of this tournament.

Medvedev was aiming for a 14th title in his 22nd final, already having won four titles this year.
Zverev was aiming for a 19th title from his 28th final, already having won five titles this year.

Both players were attempting to win a second ATP Finals title, Zverev triumphant in 2018, Medvedev defending champion.

Zverev broke in the third game of the final, and Medvedev was under pressure again in the fifth game, needing to save another break point.
Apart from these two games, serve was held with ease and Zverev led 4-3 4-0, having dropped only two points on his delivery.
A double fault and rare error, caused a slight blip, but the third seed cleared things up with a winner and was within a game of taking the set.

Serving for the set at 5-4, Zverev was soon at 40-0, two aces assisting. Medvedev’s return was out of court on the second set point and Zverev clinched the set 6-4.

Medvedev began set two with uncertainty, a double fault and unforced error seeing him down 15-30. A brilliant Zverev return followed up with a backhand winner gave him a break point. Medvedev pulled a forehand wide and Zverev was in a dominant position, a set and break ahead.
Zverev had no trouble maintaining the break, until the sixth game where he was taken to deuce. Still, neither player faced a break point beyond the opening game and Zverev went to the line at 4-3, supremely confident.
A comfortable hold took the German to 5-3 and a breath away from glory.

Medvedev, serving to stay in the match, stood at 15-30, but two big serves gave him a game point. Inexplicably the Russian netted a backhand and it was deuce. A wonderful lob when under all sorts of pressure gave Medvedev another game point. However, Zverev hit a forehand winner to return it to deuce.
Eventually Medvedev held serve, and left it to Zverev to serve for the title.

Zverev pushed a forehand long. 0-15. Medvedev returned the favour and 15-15. A tremendous forehand down the line winner from Zverev. 30-15.
A big first serve, and Medvedev couldn’t keep the return in court - two championship points.
A second serve ace and Zverev was home.

Alexander Zverev defeated the world number one to reach the final, and the world number two to win the final of the ATP Finals 6-4 6-4.
Six titles for 2021, including Olympic gold.

Muguruza wins WTA Finals

The 2021 WTA Finals - Day 8 - Final

2021 Akron WTA Finals Guadalajara, on Hard, in Guadalajara, Mexico, 10-17 November 2021.

Event not held last year due to COVID-19.

2019 champion (not defending):
Ashleigh Barty (1) who defeated Elina Svitolina (8) 6-4 6-3

Final:

Garbiñe Muguruza (6) (Spain) v Anett Kontaveit (8) (Estonia)

Before this final, Muguruza led Kontaveit 3-2 in their previous five encounters. These included two contests this year. Kontaveit won a quarter final match in Moscow, but Muguruza won a round robin match in this tournament just three days ago.
Muguruza won her semi final in straight sets against Paula Badosa, while Kontaveit needed three sets, coming back from a break down in the decider against Maria Sakkari.

Either result in this final would see a debut WTA Finals champion.

Kontaveit served first and saved a break point before holding. The Estonian saved two break points in the third game but surrendered her serve on the third break chance and Muguruza broke to lead 2-1.
After leading 40-15, Muguruza lost four straight points and was broken straight back. 2-2.
Kontaveit delivered a love game to lead 3-2.

Converting a third break point in the seventh game, Muguruza regained the advantage 4-3.
This time, the Spaniard consolidated, sealing the game with an ace for 5-3.
From 30-15, Kontaveit lost the remaining points and Muguruza broke to take the set 6-3, the final shot a delightful lob winner.

In set two, Muguruza faced her first break points, two of them in game three. They were saved with big first serves. Game five was easier - she held to love and led 3-2.
In a game of four deuces, a Muguruza forehand winner gave her a break point, but Kontaveit saved it with a clutch second serve. The eighth seed levelled at 3-3, then proceeded to break the Muguruza serve for the first time and lead 4-3. It was thanks to four gift wrapped errors from the Spanish racquet.

Serving at 5-4 to level the match, Kontaveit had 15-0 following an ace, but a double fault and two backhand errors gave Muguruza two break back points. A forehand down the line winner achieved the break and 5-5.
Muguruza held serve and was a game away from the title.
Kontaveit was broken to love and Garbiñe Muguruza won the match 6-3 7-5.

The Billie Jean King Trophy is high reward for Garbiñe Muguruza to end the 2021 season. It is the biggest hardcourt title of her career, and enables her to finish the year at #3 in the rankings. Anett Kontaveit finishes at #7.

Paul saved two break points in the opening game of the match, then broke Shapovalov to love in the fifth game.
Neither player was taken to deuce for the remainder of the set, which Paul served out 6-4.

Shapovalov saved a break point in game one of set two and broke Paul in the following game. The Canadian consolidated the break to open up a 3-0 lead.
Shapovalov rode his luck, saving three break points in the fifth game, and two more in the seventh game, to maintain the edge, and a 5-2 advantage.
Serving to stay in the set, Paul saved one set point, but couldn’t survive a second, and Shapovalov levelled the match at 4-6 6-2.

Alison Riske triumphant in Linz

Final day in Linz.

2021 Upper Austria Ladies Linz a WTA 250 tournament, on Hard Indoor, in Linz, Austria, 6-12 November 2021.
Event held last year from 9-15 November 2020.

2020 champion (not defending):
Aryna Sabalenka (1) who defeated Elise Mertens (2) 7-5 6-2

Final:

Alison Riske (8) (USA) v lucky loser Jaqueline Cristian (Romania)

This was the first meeting between the two players, and the first WTA final for Cristian. Riske was in her 11th final (second for 2021), aiming to win her third title, the last coming in June 2019 - the Rosmalen Championships in the Netherlands.

Breaks of serve were exchanged in the opening two games of the match, and Riske saved a break point in the fourth game before levelling at 2-2.
Cristian broke to love in the sixth game, two forehand winners highlighted. The Romanian consolidated for a 5-2 lead, needing to save a break point in the process.
Serving to stay in the set, Riske was down 0-30. An ace helped, but when Cristian delivered a backhand passing shot, she had two set points.
Only one was needed. Riske sent a forehand over the baseline and Cristian led 6-2.

After being taken to deuce in the second game of set two, Riske converted the second of two break points in the next game to lead 2-1.
A backhand winner from the American sealed a love game to consolidate the break and confirm a change in the momentum.
Despite a double fault, Cristian returned to her convincing form and held, remaining in touch at 2-3.
Down 0-30, Riske was assisted by two excellent first serves, and eventually won the game for a 4-2 lead, then capitalised on some careless Cristian shots to break for a second time in the set, finished off with a backhand winner. 5-2.
The American served out the set 6-2, the last two points winners from forehand then backhand.

Cristian saved one break point in the fifth game of the decider, but not the second, and Riske broke to lead 3-2.
Cristian responded immediately by breaking back and it was even once more.
From 30-15, Cristian lost three straight points, and for the third game in succession, serve was cracked.
Riske then saw six game points disappear, and another chance to consolidate a break went missing when Cristian converted the first break point on offer. 4-4.
From 0-40, Cristian fought back to deuce. She saved a fourth break point before holding serve to lead 5-4. Riske had wasted so many chances in the space of just two games and now needed to hold serve to stay in the match.

Riske came back from 15-30 to level at 5-5.
Cristian double faulted at 15-30, giving Riske two break chances. A Cristian backhand sailed long, and Riske was ahead 6-5.
After a series of errors, it was 30-30 with Riske serving for the title. She had match point after putting away a forehand at the net.
After forcing Cristian into putting a forehand out of court, Alison Riske was the winner of the match 2-6 6-2 7-5.

The Upper Austria Ladies Linz was the third trophy for Alison Riske on the WTA Tour, and comes as a relief after a number of losses in finals.
