Defending champion:

Roger Federer (2) who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas (5) 6-4 6-4

Semi final results

Novak Djokovic (1) v Gaël Monfils (3)

Djokovic had never lost to Monfils in the 16 times that they had met, but set one was possibly the most promising basis yet for thinking this may be finally be the time.

Djokovic began shakily, saving a break point in the opening game before holding for 1-0. Then at 1-1, the #1 seed wasted 5 game points in a game of six deuces, saving another break point. However, he couldn’t save a second break point in the game, as his backhand unusually landed long.

While Monfils was holding serve with relative ease, Djokovic was taken to deuce each time he went to the line.

At 2-4, and 15-40, Djokovic saved both break points, one with a drop shot winner, the next with an off forehand winner. A third break chance came with a Serb backhand error. The double break arrived when a backhand failed to clear the net.

Monfils served out the set competently 6-2.

At 1-1 in set two Djokovic found himself in strife after netting a drop shot attempt, being passed by a Monfils forehand, and hitting a forehand long. The break came with a forehand pulled wide. Monfils led 6-2 2-1 and serve to come.

At 3-2 Monfils, for the first time in the match, faced a break point - three in fact. A double fault, a Djokovic forehand winner at the net, and a Monfils backhand hit long caused the problem. An ace saved one, but a netted forehand gave Djokovic the break back and 3–3.

At 4-5 Monfils saved two set points, and at 5-6 he saved three more, so the pair ended up in a tie break.

Eight of the first nine points in the tie break were won against serve, and Monfils led 6-3 as a consequence. Three match points were his, with two serves to come.

Monfils hit a backhand wide 6-4. A forehand long 6-5.

Djokovic with two serves now. Monfils a forehand wide 6-6. Djokovic a forehand winner 7-6 and set point.

Service winner from Monfils 7-7. Forced backhand error from Monfils 8-7 Djokovic. Forehand wide from Djokovic 8-8. Backhand long from Monfils. 9-8 Djokovic. Double fault and Djokovic won the tie break and the set 7-6(8).

Sadly, Monfils couldn’t maintain the high level of tennis that he’d displayed for most of the match. Djokovic lost just one point on serve in the decider, while Monfils lost three of his four service games.

Novak Djokovic won the semi final 6-1 6-7(8) 6-2.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (2) defeated Daniel Evans 6-2 6-3

and will play Novak Djokovic in the final.

Doha semi finals

Semi final day in Doha.

2020 Qatar Total Open - a WTA Premier 5 tournament, on Hard, in Doha, Qatar, 23-28 February 2020.

Defending champion:

Elise Mertens who defeated Simona Halep (1) 3-6 6-4 6-3

Semi final results

- Petra Kvitová (8) defeated Ashleigh Barty (1)

The opening three games were breaks of serve, with Kvitová leading 2-1 and serve to come. Both players held comfortably until the eighth game where Barty had two chances to break back and level the match. Kvitová survived, and proceeded to take the set 6-4.

Barty strolled through set two, never facing a break point, but consistently placing the Czech star under pressure. Kvitová saved a break point in game two, but was broken in the fourth, and when serving to stay alive was broken again in the eighth game for Barty to prevail 6-2.

In the decider, Barty was serving at 2-2 and 30-30. A stunning forehand winner from Kvitová, and a netted Barty backhand sealed a break of serve and 3-2 Kvitová.

At 40-30, and set to consolidate, the 11th seed saw a Barty forehand fly past her, then pulled a forehand of her own into the net. The break back arrived once Kvitová missed a backhand wide.

Barty failed to take advantage, and was down 15-40 due to unforced errors and a terrific forehand return winner from Kvitová. An even better return winner, this a backhand, broke the Australian and gave Kvitová a 4-3 lead.

No more trouble on serve, and Petra Kvitová served the match out 6-4 2-6 6-4 to reach the final.

- Aryna Sabalenka (9) defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-3

and will play Petra Kvitová in the final.

Doha quarter finals

Quarter final day in Doha.

2020 Qatar Total Open - a WTA Premier 5 tournament, on Hard, in Doha, Qatar, 23-28 February 2020.

Defending champion:

Elise Mertens who defeated Simona Halep (1) 3-6 6-4 6-3

Quarter final results

- Ashleigh Barty (1) v Garbiñe Muguruza (11)

Barty was taken to deuce when serving in the first game of the match, but that was her only test of the first set, where she broke the opening Muguruza serve. The Australian’s backhand slice was immediately causing trouble, and her serve was solid following the break, dropping only two points in her next two trips to the line.

At 1-4, Muguruza was slow to reach a drop shot and her forehand landed long as a result. She responded with a ripping backhand cross court winner set up by a fine serve down the middle. However, errors off the forehand gave Barty two points for a double break, and a third forehand hit wide saw the world #1 lead 5-1.

With apparent ease, and more unforced Spanish errors, Barty reached 40-15. One was saved through a Muguruza winner, but a return error ended the set. Only 26 minutes for Barty 6-1.

After two simple service holds in set two, five games of difficulty for the server occurred.

Muguruza held for 2-1 after a visit to deuce. The longest game of the match ended with Barty levelling at 2-2, having saved four break points. Muguruza was taken to deuce again but led 3-2, then finally cracked the Aussie serve, converting the third of three break points when Barty netted a backhand, for 4-2.

Barty wasted three break back chances, but a fourth was used to her benefit after Muguruza’s backhand missed wide.

Things stabilised and serves were held until 6-6 and a tie break, where Muguruza shot to a 5-0 advantage. Barty had missed with her forehand then backhand, after great Muguruza returns, on the Australian’s first two deliveries.

Despite retrieving one of the mini breaks, Barty faced three set points when a backhand missed wide.

Muguruza prevailed on the second of the set points, her rifled forehand return forcing the error. 7-6(4)

Set three began with three service holds, Barty saving  a break point in the opening game.

The second trio of games were service breaks, and Barty led 4-2.

A love game featured Barty back to her best, and Muguruza served at 2-5. Despite leading 40-15, the 11th seed failed to win another point.
