Australian Open in jeopardy

Australia has done its level best to place the entire summer of tennis in jeopardy, first and foremost the Australian Open.
Firstly the ridiculous hard borders and quarantine rules between the states meant changing all pre Australian Open tournament venues to Victoria.

The mistake of naively trusting Victoria’s quarantine system, after the debacle of this year (still yet to be resolved with any confidence), and moving all lead up tournaments from interstate to Melbourne and Victorian regions, left us open to government change of mind and no contingency plans.

Dan Andrews has shifted the time line for international tennis players quarantine arrangements from December to January, leaving them effectively no time to participate in the lead up tournaments.
This virtually wipes out those tournaments and with the threat of participation in a Grand Slam event without any tournament match practice, there will be an assured unwillingness of many players, including the very top ranked, to bother making the trip to Australia.

The Australian Open and its lead in tournaments could very well be delayed, if not cancelled.
If delayed, the 2021 season calendar will be sent into chaos.

In hindsight, NSW, with a proven solid quarantine system in place, should have been offered the chance to plan hosting lead in tournaments and the Australian Open, as a contingency option.

The one place in the world with practically no cases of the virus could see an Australian Open in trouble. It beggars belief.

Sabalenka wins Linz title

Final decided in Linz.

2020 Upper Austria Ladies Linz a WTA International tournament, on Hard, Deco Turf on wood, in Linz, Austria, 9-15 November 2020.
2019 champion (not defending):

Lucky loser CoCo Gauff who defeated Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 1-6 6-2

Final:

Aryna Sabalenka (1) (Belarus) v Elise Mertens (2) (Belgium)

Sabalenka led Mertens 3-2 in their head to head battle coming into the Linz final, the most recent meeting being August this year, where in Dubai Sabalenka won a round of sixteen match in straight sets.

In Linz, the pair exchanged service breaks early, then Mertens had to survive break points in both the sixth and eighth games.

Against the run of play, Mertens broke the Belarusian serve to be a game away from the set, but couldn’t capitalise, and Sabalenka levelled at 5-5.

In the longest game of the match, the top seed led 40-15, but failed to convert either of the two game points. Deuce was visited seven times and three break points saved before Sabalenka held for a 6-5 advantage.

Mertens fell behind 15-40, and Sabalenka used the first of two set points to lead 7-5.

In set two Sabalenka broke to lead 2-0, and saved two break points to lead 4-1. A love game put the top seed within one game of victory, and another break of serve gave her the title. Aryna Sabalenka defeated Elise Mertens 7-5 6-2 to capture the Linz trophy, her eighth WTA title from 12 finals, and her third of 2020.

The victory moves Sabalenka back into the top ten at the expense of Serena Williams.

Sinner wins Sofia title - his first

Final decided in Sofia.

2020 Sofia Open an ATP 250 tournament, on Hard, Acrylic on wood, in Sofia, Bulgaria, 8-14 November 2020.
2019 champion (not defending):

Daniil Medvedev (3) who defeated Marton Fucsovics 6-4 6-3

Final:

Jannik Sinner (Italy) v Vasek Pospisil (Canada)

The pair had never met before this final, which would be the third for 30 year old Pospisil, having lost in Washington D.C. in 2014 and Montpellier in February this year.

Sinner, the only teenager ranked in the top 100, was playing in his first ATP final.

Pospisil saved three break points in the opening game of the final, but in game three wasted two game points and dropped serve.

Sinner consolidated, saving a break point himself to lead 3-1. Serves were held from that stage and Sinner’s first love game of the match gave him the set 6-4.

Set two saw an exchange of service breaks then two love games on serve for a 2-2 scoreline.

Pospisil broke again in the sixth game and maintained that edge with two successive love games on serve granting him the set 6-3.

The only threat to serve in twelve games of the decider came in the first game where Sinner saved two break points. Thereafter, neither player was even taken to deuce, and a tie break was required.

Sinner achieved the first mini break to lead 4-2, and his serve wasn’t breached throughout the tie break. At 3-6, and facing three match points, Pospisil lost the point on his serve, and Jannik Sinner won his first ATP title 6-4 3-6 7-6(3).

Sinner jumps seven spots to a new career high ranking of #37.

Medvedev captures Paris Masters title

Final decided in Paris.

2020 Rolex Paris Masters an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Hard, Greenset on boards, in Paris, France, 2-8 November 2020.
2019 champion (not defending):

Novak Djokovic (1) who defeated Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-4

Final:

Alexander Zverev (4) (Germany) v Daniil Medvedev (3) (Russia)

Zverev led Medvedev 5-1 in career meetings prior to this final, and was on a winning streak of 11 matches which included two successive titles in Cologne. Medvedev had come to Paris with wins in just three of his past eight matches, but struck form at the right time.

Neither player created a break point in the first eleven games of set one, with only one deuce.

Serving to stay in the set, Medvedev failed to cope with the German attack, and backhand mistakes saw him fall behind 0-40. He staved off two set points, but a forehand error cost the Russian, and Zverev led 7-5.

4-4 in set two, but while Medvedev surrendered just four of twenty points on serve to reach there, Zverev struggled through a fifteen minute, 22 point game to hold at 2-1, after leading 40-15. He visited deuce eight times and needed to save four break points.

Medvedev wasn’t as lenient in the ninth game, breaking with the first chance, and he served out the set to love, levelling at 5-7 6-4.

In the decider, Medvedev broke to love in the opening game. Zverev had chances to level, but all four break points were saved. Momentum was completely with the third seed now, and he was assisted by a range of unforced errors off the German racquet.

A second service break gave Medvedev a 4-0 advantage, and Zverev’s hopes were dashed.

Serving at 1-5, Zverev was broken once more, and Daniil Medvedev became the fourth Russian to claim the Paris Masters title, winning 5-7 6-4 6-1.

Medvedev moves ahead of Federer to #4 in the world rankings, equalling his career high.
