Fritz wins Atlanta Open

Final day in Atlanta.

2023 Atlanta Open, an ATP 250 tournament, on Hard, Atlanta, Georgia, USA, 24-30 July 2023.

Defending champion:
Alex de Minaur (3) who defeated Jenson Brooksby (6) 6-3 6-3

Final:

Taylor Fritz (1) (USA) v Aleksandar Vukic (Australia)

First meeting between the players, and first ATP Tour final for Vukic.

Vukic saved a break point in the second game of the match.
No more break points faced until Vukic served at 5-6 to stay in the set.

Fritz broke serve and took the set 7-5,

Vukic saved a break point  in game two of set two.
No more break points faced until Vukic served at 5-6 to stay in the match.
He saved two match points and forced a tie break.

The first seven points went with serve, then Vukic won the next point on the Fritz serve to lead 5-3.
At 6-4 Vukic had two set points. Fritz saved one, but not a second, and Vukic won the set 7-6(5).

Down 0-40 in the opening game of the decider, Vukic saved all three break points and held serve.
Fritz broke serve in the seventh game to lead 4-3.

That was enough, as he maintained the break and eventually served out jthe match 7-5 6-7(5) 6-4.

Sixth career title for Taylor Fritz, and second this year, both on home soil,  following Delray Beach in February.

Popyrin wins title in Umag

Final day in Umag.

2023 Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, an ATP 250 tournament, on Clay, Umag, Croatia, 24-30 July 2023.

2022 champion (not defending):
Jannik Sinner (2) who defeated Carlos Alcaraz (1) 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1

Final:

Alexei Popyrin (Australia) v Stan Wawrinka (6) (Switzerland)

First meeting between the players.

Popyrin broke the Wawrinka serve in game three of the opening set.
Neither player was taken to deuce in any other game until Popyrin served for the set at 5-4.

Wawrinka broke back and beveled things at 5-5.
A tiebreak ultimately was required, and Wawrinka won a close one, and the set 7-6(5).

Popyrin broke serve in game two of set two to lead 2-0.
Wawrinka saved three break points in the fourth game to avoid going down a double break.
He trailed 1-3.
No more beak points faced for the set which Popyrin served out 6-3.

The players exchanged breaks of serve in the opening two games of the decider.
Popyrin saved a break point in a four deuce sixth game and the score was 3-3.

Serving at 4-4, Wawrinka was down 15-40. He saved one break point but not the second, and Popyrin led 5-4.

Alexei Popyrin served out the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4 to claim his second title, following the first in Singapore, February 2021.

Zverev wins Hamburg title

Final day in Hamburg.

2023 Hamburg European Open, an ATP 500 tournament, on Clay, Hamburg, Germany, 24-30 July 2023.

Defending champion:
Lorenzo Musetti who defeated Carlos Alcaraz (1) 6-4 6-7(6) 6-4.

Final:

Alexander Zverev (4) (Germany) v Laslo Djere (Serbia)

Zverev won both of the previous contests between the players.
They were in 2021, including a third round of Roland Garros.

No break points faced through the first eight games of the final.
Zverev saved four break points before holding for 5-4.

Serving at 5-6, Djere was broken and Zverev took the opening set 7-5.

Zverev broke serve in game four of set two to lead 3-1.
Djere broke back in the seventh game 3-4.

Comeback was short lived as Zverev broke again for a 5-3 lead then served out the match 7-5 6-3.

Title number 20 for Zverev and first since the ATP Finals in November 2021.

Swiatek claims title in Warsaw

Final day in Warsaw.
Including completion of unfinished semi final

Caroline Garcia (5) who defeated Ana Bogdan 6-4 6-1

Semi final results:

Iga Swiatek (1) defeated Yanina Wickmayer 6-1 7-6(6) after play resumed from previous day

Final:

Iga Swiatek (1) (Poland) v Laura Siegemund (Germany)

Swiatek won the only previous match between the players - second round in Madrid, May 2021.

Set one of the final saw Swiatek win 12 of 14 points on her own serve.
Meanwhile, she broke each of the three times Siegemund went to the line.
6-0 in half an hour.

Swiatek broke serve in game two of set two and consolidated to lead 3-0.
Siegemund finally held serve in the fourth game to register on the scoreboard.

At 1-4, Siegemund was broken again and Swiatek quickly served out the match 6-0 6-1.

Title number 15 for Iga Swiatek, 4th in 2023, this one in front of her home crowd.

Cocciaretto 1st title in Lausanne

Final day in Lausanne.

Final:

Clara Burel (France) v Elisabetta Cocciaretto (2) (Italy)

Cocciaretto won the only previous match between the players - a quarter final in the Makarska WTA 125K series tournament, June 2022.
Both players were hoping for a first WTA Tour title, each in their second final.

Cocciaretto saved a break point in the third game of the opening set, then broke the Burel serve to lead 3-1.
The #2 seed saved a further two break points when consolidating for 4-1.

Burel broke back in the ninth game, but when serving at 5-6 was broken to love and Cocciaretto took the set 7-5.

Cocciaretto saved a break point in game one of set two, and serves were held through six games. 3-3.
Three breaks of serve followed, and Burel led 5-4.

Burel served out the set 6-4

In the decider, Burel broke serve in the fifth game to lead 3-2.
Cocciaretto broke back in the eighth game and levelled at 4-4.
Serving at 4-5, Burel failed to hold and Cocciaretto won the match 7-5 4-6 6-4.

First title for Elisabetta Cocciaretto and  a new career high ranking of #30.

Final:

Wildcard Noma Noha Akugue (Germany) v Arantxa Rus (7) (Netherlands)

First match between the players, and first WTA Tour final for both players.

In set one, Rus broke serve in games two and four.
She then saved a break point in the fifth game before holding for 5-0.
Another break gave Rus the set 6-0.

The players exchanged service breaks in the opening two games of set two.
Akugue saved two break points in the third game and held serve.

No more break chances until Akugue served at 4-5.
Two match points were saved, and eventually a tie break was needed.

After losing the opening point on her own serve, Rus  won the next six points.
Akugue saved two of the five match points but Rus won the set and match 6-0 7-6(3).

First title for Arantxa Rus on the WTA Tour, adding to her two titles in the WTA 125K Series this year - 
La Bisbal d’Empordá in June and Contrexéville earlier this month.
