Wimbledon - Ladie’s Singles Preview

Wimbledon Ladie’s Singles

As with the men, I’ve selected a list of women from which I believe the winner of this year’s Wimbledon will be determined..

Then I will see what the draw has provided for each and give my final predictions.

There are two in the draw that have won the trophy before, and I rate them both as significant in what happens during the next fortnight.

Petra Kvitova is the 2011 and 2014 champion. Since then she has won four more grass court tournaments, including Eastbourne last year and Berlin this year.

Elena Rybakina is the reigning champion, after making the round of sixteen in 2021. She also was a semi finalist in Eastbourne in 2021.

Aryna Sabalenka was a Wimbledon semi finalist in 2021, and a beaten finalist in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last year.

Ons Jabeur was last year’s beaten Wimbledon finalist, and

won the 2022 Berlin and 2021 Birmingham tournaments.

Ekaterina Alexandrova hasn’t a great Wimbledon record, but she has won in ‘s-Hertogenbosch the past two years, and maybe 2023 could see her fortunes change.

Beatriz Haddad Maia also has performed well on grass, yet not taken that form into Wimbledon. Time for that to be rectified.

She won both Birmingham and Nottingham tournaments last year, and was a semi finalist in Eastbourne.

Madison Keys made the quarters at Wimbledon in 2015, and her best since was round of sixteen in 2021, but her second Eastbourne trophy this week signalled her intentions to cause trouble for the favourites.

Iga Swiatek is the best in the business, but her margin over the rest is minimised somewhat when the surface is grass.

Best Wimbledon was round of sixteen in 2021.

Her run in Bad Homburg this week was only stopped at the semis because of withdrawal from illness, and Swiatek will be ready for a true Wimbledon assault.

Caroline Garcia made the round of sixteen at last year’s Wimbledon, and won last year’s Bad Homburg tournament.

Jelena Ostapenko is a former Wimbledon semi and quarter finalist, and just won this year’s Birmingham tournament.

According to the draw, and my evaluation:

Petra Kvitova (9) will need to beat 2021 Wimbledon runner up Karolina Pliskova (18) in the third round, and Ons Jabeur (6) in the round of sixteen, to reach the quarters, and I predict she will.

Jelena Ostapenko (17) will meet and beat Beatriz Haddad Maia (13) in the third round. Before that, Ostapenko will possibly have to beat last year’s semi finalist Tatjana Maria in the second round.

Beyond that a round of sixteen contest with Elena Rybakina awaits.

Ekaterina Alexandrova (21) will reach her first round of sixteen, but Aryna Sabalenka (2) will send her packing at that point.

Sabalenka will then need to deal with Madison Keys (25) in a quarter final after Keys stuns both Maria Sakkari (8) in the third round and Barbora Krejcikova (10) in the round of sixteen.

Caroline Garcia (5) will meet either Veronika Kudermetova (12) or Donna Vekic (20) in the round of sixteen.

A win there would mean a quarter final against either Jessica Pegula (4), Liudmila Samsonova (15) or unseeded Katerina Siniakova, who just won the 2023 Bad Homburg tournament.

I don’t see a serious threat to Iga Swiatek in her area of the draw, at least until the quarter finals where she will play either Daria Kasatkina (11) or CoCo Gauff (7).

Predictions:

Quarter finals:

Iga Swiatek (1) defeats Daria Kasatkina (11)

Caroline Garcia (5) defeats Liudmila Samsonova (15)

Petra Kvitova (9) defeats Elena Rybakina (3)

Aryna Sabalenka 2) defeats Madison Keys (25)

Semi finals:

Iga Swiatek(1) defeats Caroline Garcia (5)

Petra Kvitova (9) defeats Aryna Sabalenka (2)

A third Wimbledon for Kvitova nine years after her last one.
