Alexei Popyrin (Australia) v Stan Wawrinka (6) (Switzerland)
First meeting between the players.
Popyrin broke the Wawrinka serve in game three of the opening set.
Neither player was taken to deuce in any other game until Popyrin served for the set at 5-4.
Wawrinka broke back and beveled things at 5-5.
A tiebreak ultimately was required, and Wawrinka won a close one, and the set 7-6(5).
Popyrin broke serve in game two of set two to lead 2-0.
Wawrinka saved three break points in the fourth game to avoid going down a double break.
He trailed 1-3.
No more beak points faced for the set which Popyrin served out 6-3.
The players exchanged breaks of serve in the opening two games of the decider.
Popyrin saved a break point in a four deuce sixth game and the score was 3-3.
Serving at 4-4, Wawrinka was down 15-40. He saved one break point but not the second, and Popyrin led 5-4.
Alexei Popyrin served out the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4 to claim his second title, following the first in Singapore, February 2021.
