Giorgi wins Mérida title

Final day in Mérida.

2023 Mérida Open Akron, a WTA 250 tournament, on Hard, in Mérida, Mexico, 20-26 February 2023.

This is a new tournament on the WTA Tour calendar, and replaces the Abierto Akron Zapopan, which was held in Zapopan, Mexico from 2019-2022.

Final:

Qualifier Rebecca Peterson (Sweden) v Camila Giorgi (Italy)

Giorgi won two of the previous three contests between the players, but they hadn’t met since Palermo in 2020 when Giorgi won a first round match.

In the opening set, Giorgi saved two break points in the third game, and Peterson saved a break point in the sixth.
It was 3-3.
Peterson broke to lead 4-3, but Giorgi struck back in the tenth game to level at 5-5.

Peterson saved a set point when serving at 5-6, and then forced a tie break.
Giorgi raced to a 5-1 lead and eventually won the tie break and the set 7-6(3).

Peterson broke the Giorgi serve in game four of set two to lead 3-1.
Another break and Giorgi slipped behind 5-1.
Peterson served out the set 6-1.

Peterson won her seventh game in a row when she broke Giorgi in game two of the decider.
Giorgi was taken to deuce in the third game but held for 1-2.
The break back occurred in the following game. 2-2.

Giorgi broke again for a 4-2 lead, then held to love, making it five games in a row.

Peterson served to stay in the match, and saved one match point.
She couldn’t save a second, and Giorgi won the battle 7-6(3) 1-6 6-2.

It was title number four for Camila Giorgi, and her first since the Canadian Open in August 2021.

Norrie triumphant in Rio Open

Final day in Rio de Janeiro.

2023 Rio Open presented by Claro, an ATP 500 tournament, on Clay, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 20-26 February 2023.

Defending champion:
Carlos Alcaraz (7) who defeated Diego Schwartzman (3) 6-4 6-2

Final:

Carlos Alcaraz (1) (Spain) v Cameron Norrie (2) (Great Britain)

In the five previous times they met, Alcaraz was victorious in four, including last weeks final in Buenos Aires.

In the opening set, Alcaraz saved a break point in the fifth game, and Norrie saved three break points in the eighth game.
It was 4-4.

Norrie served at 4-5 to stay in the set, and at 40-15 appeared to have done enough.
However, Alcaraz played some outstanding tennis to reach set point.
Norrie responded in kind to save the situation and level at 5-5.

Alcaraz held for 6-5, to again put Norrie under pressure, at the line to stay in the set.

A double fault and loose backhand. 0-30.
Alcaraz in return gifted two points, and then a quality serve gave Norrie game point.
He squandered it with another poor ground stroke.
A wonderful drop shot winner from Alcaraz - set point,
Back hand down the line winner from Alcaraz and the set was his 7-5.

In the opening game of set two, Alcaraz saved two break points before holding serve.
He then broke the Norrie serve and led 2-0.

At 0-3 and 0-30, things looked grim for Norrie, but he not only held serve, but broke Alcaraz in the following game.
Alcaraz anead 3-2, but games back on serve.
Norrie won his fourth game in succession after breaking Alcaraz again - he led 4-3.

Alcaraz broke back for 4-4.
Norrie broke next game and would serve for the set at 5-4.

A love game and Norrie took the set 6-4 to level the match.

The pair exchanged service breaks in games two and three of the decider.
Alcaraz saved a break point in game five with a winning drop shot, but he was broken when Norrie converted a second break point with a forehand passing shot. Norrie ahead 3-2.

Alcaraz broke back and then held to take back the lead 4-3.
Serving at 4-4, Alcaraz saved two break points before holding and led 5-4.
Norrie levelled at 5-5.

Alcaraz was down 0-40 in the next game, but saved all the three break points he faced.
He couldn’t save a fourth break point later in the game and Norrie was a game away from victory.

Alcaraz saved the first match point with a winning backhand, but on the next match point Norrie sealed things with an ace.

Cameron Norrie won a thriller 5-7 6-4 7-5.

This was title number five for Norrie after two losses in finals in 2023. His first title since Lyon in May 2022.

WTA - Austin

Hubert Hurkacz (1) (Poland) v Benjamin Bonzi (France)

This would be the first contest between the players.

Bonzi was broken in the fourth game of the opening set, and Hurkacz led 3-1.
Bonzi broke back in the seventh game and trailed 3-4.
Hurkacz broke again to be a game away from the set.

Hurkacz served out the set 6-3.

In game seven of set two, Bonzi saved two break points before holding serve.
He led 4-3.
Serving at 5-6 to stay in the set, Hurkacz saved three set points.
He held on and forced a tie break.

The first point of the tie break was won by Hurkacz against the Bonzi serve
The rest of the tie break went with serve, and so Hurkacz was able to take the set 7-6(4).

Hubert Hurkacz won the match 6-3 7-6(4), claiming his sixth title, and first since Halle in June last year.

Final:

Wildcard Andy Murray (Great Britain) v Daniil Medvedev (3) (Russia)

Medvedev won both previous contests between the players, including the more recent - 2nd round, Miami 2022.

Murray served first and was soon down 0-40.
He saved the three break points, but Medvedev converted a fourth to lead 1-0.
Medvedev consolidated with a comfortable service hold.

In a three deuce fourth game, Medvedev saved two break points before holding for 3-1.
Medvedev broke again to extend his advantage to 4-1.

For a second time Medvedev faced two break points, but here Murray capitalised and retrieved one of the breaks.
2-4.
Serving at 4-3, Medvedev had to fight off break point for the third service game in succession.
He held on and led 5-3.

Medvedev served for the set at 5-4.
Against the trend of his previous attempts from the line, a love game secured him the set 6-4.

Murray was broken in the opening game of set two.
Medvedev consolidated for 2-0.
In the fourth game, Medvedev saved a break point before extending his lead to 3-1.

Medvedev led 3-2 and 40-15, but lost the next four points and was broken. 3-3.

Murray led 4-4 and 40-0, but let that lead slip and was broken.
Medvedev led 5-4 and would serve for the match.
 
Daniil Medvedev served it out 6-4 6-4 to claim his 17th title, following his Rotterdam success last week.

Krejcikova wins Dubai title

Final day in Dubai.

2023 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, a WTA 1000 tournament, on Hard, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 19-26 February 2023.

Defending champion:
Jelena Ostapenko who defeated Veronika Kudermetova 6-0 6-4

Final:

Iga Swiatek (1) (Poland) v Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic)

Swiatek won the first two of three previous contests between the players - both in 2021.
However, Krejcikova won the most recent - the final in Ostrava, October last year.

Swiatek served first and led 40-15, but smart returning allowed Krejcikova to win the next four points and break serve.
A love game on serve gave Krejcikova a 2-0 lead.

Swiatek broke back to love in the sixth game and it was 3-3.
Krejcikova returned the favour immediately and led 4-3 with a break in hand.

A 40-15 lead for Krejcikova in the eighth game evaporated, and Swiatek eventually broke serve to level at 4-4.
Remarkably, serve was broken for the fourth game in a row, this time Swiatek not winning a point.
Krejcikova would serve for the set at 5-4.

An ace,plus wayward returning from Swiatek,delivered a love game and the first set to Krejcikova 6-4.

In game two of set two, Krejcikova saved two break points before levelling at 1-1.
Krejcikova did the same in game four and it was 2-2.
Swiatek was broken next game and Krejcikova led 3-2.

At 2-4 and 40-15, Swiatek again let a lead slip and was broken.
Krejcikova led 5-2 and would serve for the match.

From 15-15, Krejcikova hit two aces and then her forehand winner sealed the win 6-4 6-2.

This was the sixth career title for Barbora Krejcikova, and first at WTA 1000 level.

2023 Mérida Open Akron, a WTA 250 tournament, on Hard, in Mérida, Mexico, 20-26 February 2023.

This is a new tournament on the WTA Tour calendar, and replaces the Abierto Akron Zapopan, which was held in Zapopan, Mexico from 2019-2022.

Kateryna Baindl withdrew after the main draw was published due to a thigh injury, and was replaced by lucky loser Varvara Gracheva.
