Haddad Maia 1st title Nottingham

Final day in Nottingham.

2022 Rothesay Open Nottingham, a WTA 250 tournament, on Grassin Nottingham, United Kingdom, 6-12 June 2022.

2021 champion (not defending):
Johanna Konta (1) who defeated Zhang Shuai (4) 6-2 6-1


Final:


Beatriz Haddad Maia (7) (Brazil) v Alison Riske (6) (USA)


This would be the first match between the two players.


Riske had won three titles from twelve finals before this one, the most recent Linz in November 2021.

Haddad Maia had been in one final before this one, losing the Korea Open in September 2017 to Jelena Ostapenko.


Two love games opened the match but the third game saw Haddad Maia break and lead 2-1.

Break points were available in games five, six and seven but all were saved.

Riske saved another - a set point when serving at 3-5.


Haddad Maia served it out 6-4.


Riske won the first six points of set two, and Haddad Maia was forced to save two break points in a lengthy second game.

The seventh seed failed with her forehand on a third break point and trailed 0-2.

Down 0-40, Riske delivered two aces, then proceeded to hold serve - 3-0.


Riske broke again in the fourth game, then a love game gave her a 5-0 lead.

Riske saved three break points when serving for the set at 5-1, but she did win it 6-1 to tie the match.


The 6th seed struck first in the decider, breaking in the third game to lead 2-1.

Haddad Maia immediately broke back.


At 3-4, Riske saved two break points, but double faulted on a third.


Haddad Maia served at 5-3.

Riske hit a backhand wide 15-0. Double fault 15-15. Big serve unreturned 30-15. Another big serve returned out. Two match points.

Riske’s next return was too long and the fight was over.


Beatriz Haddad Maia won 6-4 1-6 6-3 to claim her first title.
