Berrettini takes Stuttgart title

Final day in Stuttgart.

2022 BOSS Open, an ATP 250 tournament, on Grassin Stuttgart, Germany, 6-12 June 2022.

2021 champion (not defending):
Marin Cilic who defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) 7-6(2) 6-3


Final:


Andy Murray (United Kingdom) v Matteo Berrettini (2) (Italy)


The two previous meetings between the pair were split 1-1, the most recent a win to Berrettini - Queen’s Club, June 2021.


Murray had won 46 titles in his previous 69 finals, the most recent the European Open in Belgium, October 2019.

Berrettini had won 5 titles in his previous 8 finals, the most recent Queen’s Club, June 2021.


Break points were saved in games four and five, but Berrettini converted a break point available in the third game.

No more break chances, and Berrettini served out the first set 6-4.


Murray saved three break points in the ninth game of set two.


Berrettini served at 5-6 to stay in the set.

Murray began with a winner, then Berrettini followed with an error and a double fault to stare three set points in the face.

Murray won the set 7-5 after Berrettini missed with a forehand.


In the opening game of the decider, Murray was broken to love.

No more break chances through to the ninth game, but Murray was clearly hampered by injury and for one thing couldn’t serve with any power.


Murray served at 3-5 to stay in the match.

He led 40-0, but then four straight points to Berrettini brought up match point. It was saved by a Murray backhand winner.

Murray saw two game points disappear and a third match point arrived when his forehand went astray.

When a Murray backhand found the net the battle had ended.


Matteo Berrettini won the match 6-4 5-7 6-3 to take the title.
