The players had met three times previously.
Bencic won a round of sixteen match in Madrid, May 2021 and the final of Charleston, April this year, while Jabeur won the return round of sixteen match in Madrid, May this year.
Jabeur had won two titles from seven finals before this one.
Bencic had won six titles from fourteen finals before this one.
Jabeur served first and held. Bencic wasn’t as successful and surrendered her serve, Jabeur delivered a love game to consolidate a 3-0 advantage.
Bencic broke back in the seventh game, only to fall behind 0-40 in the very next.
Jabeur broke with the second of the break points and was ahead 5-3.
Serving for the set, Jabeur saved two break points, saw one set point disappear, saved two more break points, then clinched it 6-3 on the second set point.
Jabeur broke the Bencic serve in game three of set two to lead 2-1.
Unfortunately the match ended there as Bencic was forced to retire with injury to her ankle.
Ons Jabeur won the match 6-3 2-1 (retired).
The title win enabled Jabeur to ascend to #3 in the rankings - a career high.
