Swiatek was aiming to win her second Roland Garros crown, having won in 2020.
Gauff was appearing in her first Grand Slam final.
Swiatek had won both previous contests between the pair - semi final in Rome 2021, and round of sixteen in Miami this year.
Gauff served first and was broken, a double fault mixed in with some unforced errors.
Swiatek settled well early on serve, but Gauff challenged with a couple of backhand winners taking it to deuce.
Swiatek held, a forehand winner the final confirmation. 2-0.
Gauff saved four break points in the third game, but her forehand, which had been suspect from the outset, failed on the fifth and Swiatek led 3-0.
Serving at 1-5 to stay in the set, Gauff was down 15-40. She saved one set point but not the next and Swiatek was ahead 6-1.
Swiatek committed a series of unexpected unforced errors in the opening game of set two, and Gauff broke for 1-0.
The break was consolidated, sealed with a Gauff forehand winner.
At 2-1, Gauff delivered a poor service game, and Swiatek took full advantage. The top seed broke, then sped through the next game, taking the lead 3-2.
Gauff was at 15-30 in game six when Swiatek hit a backhand return winner to create two break points. She only needed one, and the advantage was extended to 4-2.
Down 15-30, Swiatek won the final three points of game seven, thanks in most part to Gauff mistakes, and was just a game away from the match.
Serving at 2-5 to stay in the match, Gauff was taken to deuce but managed to hold on and force Swiatek to serve for it.
At 5-3, Swiatek won the first point, but then Gauff hit a forehand winner to make it 15-15.
Gauff was forced into error, then a return was hit out of court to give Swiatek two championship points.
When Gauff put a forehand return long, the match was over.
Iga Swiatek won 6-1 6-3, her 35th successive match win, and collected her second Roland Garros trophy.
