Sinner triumphant in Umag

Final day in Umag.

2022 Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, an ATP 250 tournament, on Clay, in Umag, Croatia, 25-31 July 2022.

Defending champion:
Carlos Alcaraz (7) who defeated Richard Gasquet (4) 6-2 6-2

Final:

Carlos Alcaraz (1) (Spain) v Jannik Sinner (2) (Italy)

The players split their two previous matches 1-1, Sinner victorious in the more recent encounter - round of 16 Wimbledon this year.

Neither player faced a break point in set one and a tie break was required.
At 1-2, Sinner lost both points on his serve, and Alcaraz stretched the advantage to 5-1.
Sinner dragged it back to 4-5, retrieving one of the mini breaks, but Alcaraz won the next point on serve and had two set points.
Sinner saved one, but not the second, and Alcaraz was ahead 7-6(5).

Sinner was down 0-40 in game two of set two, and was able to save the three break points.
He also saved three more break points in that game, held serve and levelled at 1-1.

In the next game, Alcaraz faced his first break point of the match - he saved it.
However he couldn’t save the next one, and Sinner achieved the first service break of the match. He led 2-1.
Sinner saved two break points before consolidating at 3-1.

Two Alcaraz unforced errors then a ripping Sinner forehand winner made it 0-40 and the top seed faced three break points.
Another error and Alcaraz was down a double break.
Sinner then held serve in a game not featuring a break point, to strengthen his position. 5-1.

A failing backhand and double fault from Alcaraz helped produce two set points for Sinner.
One was saved, but Sinner took the set with the next 6-1.

The players exchanged love games on serve to begin the decider.
Sinner saved a break point before holding serve in game three.
Sinner played some wonderful shots to bring Alcaraz to 15-40 in the next game.
Alcaraz saved one break point but not the second, and Sinner led 3-1.

A love game consolidated the position.
Alcaraz faced two more break points in the sixth game and eventually lost serve.
Sinner now was just a game from the match.

Serving for the victory, Sinner was gifted errors from Alcaraz and raced to 40-0.
He only needed one of the three match points and the match was over.

Jannik Sinner triumphed 6-7(5) 6-1 6-1 to take the title, his sixth from seven finals, and first since the European Open last October.
