Garcia wins Warsaw title

Final day in Warsaw.

2022 BNP Paribas Poland Open, a WTA 250 tournament, on Clayin Warsaw, Poland, 25-31 July 2022.

Defending champion:
Maryna Zanevska who defeated Kristina Kucova 6-4 7-6(4)

Final:

Caroline Garcia (5) (France) v Ana Bogdan (Romania)

Garcia won the only previous match between the pair, but it was five years ago in a Wimbledon second round, so had little bearing on the final.
While Bogdan had won 14 titles on the ITF circuit, this would be her first WTA career final.

Garcia began well, holding serve, then breaking Bogdan for 2-0.
Bogdan saw three break back chances disappear in the fifth game before converting a fourth and it was back on serve.
Garcia immediately regained the initiative by breaking for 4-2.

The consolidation was a struggle, but eventually Garcia held, and was a game away from the set.
When serving for the set at 5-3, Garcia double faulted following Bogdan’s forehand winner the previous point.
A Garcia backhand winner and solid serve made it 30-30.
A second double fault for the game and Bogdan had break point.
A forehand winner from the Bogdan racquet achieved the break and the set continued.

Serving for a second time to stay in the set, Bogdan netted a forehand.
Garcia then netted a backhand. Bogdan pushed a forehand wide. 15-30.
A great Garcia volley winner gave her two set points.
Bogdan couldn’t control a forehand after Garcia’s excellent return, and the set was over.

Garcia ahead 6-4.

Garcia broke serve in the fourth game of set two, and was ahead 3-1.
Bogdan dropped serve once more in the sixth game, leaving Garcia to serve for the title.
This she did with ease.

Caroline Garcia won 6-4 6-1, and claimed her ninth title from twelve finals.
Two titles this year, also winning in Bad Homburg in June.
