Qualifier Garcia wins Cincinnati title

Final day in Cincinnati.

2022 Western & Southern Open, a WTA 1000 tournament, on Hard, in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, 15-21 August 2022.

2021 champion (not defending):
Ashleigh Barty (1) who defeated wildcard Jil Teichmann 6-3 6-1

Final:

Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic) v qualifier Caroline Garcia (France)

In the eight previous matches between the players, Kvitova led 5-3.
Kvitova won the two most recent battles, both in 2019. Miami (March) and Madrid.(May).

In the final, Garcia broke serve in the opening game, and saved two break points before holding for 2-0.
Kvitova dropped serve again in the third game, and the following two service games were held to love.

Garcia saved another pair of break points on the way to holding for 5-1.
Kvitova threw in another love game, forcing Garcia to serve for the set, which she did successfully 6-2

Set two began the same as set one, with Garcia breaking the Czech serve.
Garcia maintained that edge, although she had to save a break point in gem four, and three more in game six.
The lead was 4-2.

Kvitova served at 3-5 to stay in the match, and held easily.
Garcia served for the match at 5-4, and she was rock solid, winning the game, set, match and title 6-2 6-4.

This was title number ten from thirteen finals for Garcia - her third at this level - and would improve her ranking from #35 to #17, guaranteeing a seeding at the US Open.
