Final day in Montreal.
2022 National Bank Open presented by Rogers, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Hard, in Montreal, Canada, 8-14 August 2022.
Defending champion:
Daniil Medvedev (1) who defeated Reilly Opelka 6-4 6-3
Final:
Hubert Hurkacz (8) (Poland) v Pablo Carreno Busta
The players met twice before in ATP Tour matches, both last year.
Carreno Busta won a round of sixteen match in Cincinnati in August, and Hurkacz won the final in Metz in September.
Hurkacz opened proceedings, and there were no break opportunities in the first five games.
Out of the blue, Hurkacz broke Carreno Busta to love in the sixth game and led 4-2.
Although all of the points were errors from the Spaniard, credit should be given to Hurkacz for shot making forcing his opponent to move to difficult positions.
No more looks at break chances, and Hurkacz served out the set 6-3.
In game two of set two, Hurkacz double faulted, then hit two loose forehands wide, to give Carreno Busta three break points.
Another poor forehand hit the net and Carreno Busta was handed a 2-0 lead on a plate.
A service hold extended this to 3-0.
Hurkacz was taken to deuce but held for 1-3, and no more threats to serve for either player in the remaining games of the set.
Carreno Busta served it out 6-3.
Carreno Busta broke in the third game of the decider for a 2-1 lead.
No more break chances until Hurkacz was serving at 3-5 to stay in the match.
Hurkacz hit the net with his forehand 0-15. Double fault 0-30. Two Hurkacz forehand winners 30-30.
Hurkacz netted a backhand, and gave Carreno Busta match point.
When Hurkacz couldn’t handle a forehand, the battle ended.
Pablo Carreno Busta won the contest 3-6 6-3 6-3, and with it his seventh title from twelve finals.
This was his first Masters 1000 final and so his first title at that level.
