This was the first main draw AO match for teenager Tauson.
The fourth main draw experience for Sharma at the AO, with best result a second round in 2019.
In their one meeting so far, Tauson was successful, in Luxembourg, September 2021.
Tauson served first.
Through six games, no break points and a number of winners from both players.
At 3-4, Sharma was forced into error due to good returning from Tauson, but the resultant break point was not converted.
However, another chance was created with a backhand winner, and a Sharma error confirmed the first break of the match.
Tauson served for the set, and dropped just one point in taking it 6-3.
Sharma saved a break point in the opening game of set two, and stopped the Danish momentum to lead 1-0.
But a string of errors contributed to a love game and a break of the Sharma serve in game three. Tauson ahead 2-1.
Unforced Tauson errors and a Sharma backhand winner allowed the Australian to break straight back. 2-2.
Sharma overcame a double fault to hold. 3-2.
Down 0-40, Tauson saved all three break points and it was 3-3.
A double fault and forehand error from Sharma gave Tauson a break to lead 4-3.
Sharma served at 3-5 to stay in the match.
At 30-30 an unforced Australian forehand error gave Tauson match point. Saved. Serve held.
Tauson served for the match. Backhand volley winner and two forehand errors from Tauson. 15-30. Two forehand errors from Sharma and match point.
Backhand into the net and Tauson won the match 6-3 6-4.
