The players had met four times previously with the results split 2-2.
Berrettini won the most recent match - semis in Madrid, May 2021.
Berrettini was the first to break serve in the final - in the fifth game of set one.
He then saved three break points before holding to lead 4-2.
No more breaks of serve, and Berrettini served out the set 6-4.
Ruud saved two break points in the third game of set two.
Only one point was dropped in total on serve in seven other games which resulted in a 4-4 scoreline.
Ruud saved a break point in the ninth game before holding to lead 5-4.
Eventually a tie break was required.
The first three points were won against serve, giving Ruud the edge.
Berrettini lost his third point on serve, and Ruud led 5-1 as they changed ends.
Berrettini retrieved one of the mini breaks but still trailed 3-5.
Ruud won the set 7-6(4), the final point on a Berrettini serve.
In the opening game of the decider, Berrettini survived four deuces and saved three break points.
He wasn’t as fortunate in the third game where Ruud achieved the break for a 2-1 advantage.
Berrettini saved three break points in the fifth game, but couldn’t save a fourth, and Ruud was up a double break.
Casper Ruud served out the match 4-6 7-6(4) 6-2 to successfully defend his title.
