Zverev wins gold for Germany

Medals decided in Olympic Games Tokyo, Japan.

Russian athletes are banned from using their country’s name, flag or anthem - instead, they will compete under the team name ROC (Russian Olympic Committee)

Gold medal:


Alexander Zverev (4) (Germany) defeated Karen Khachanov (12) (ROC) 6-3 6-1


Head to head, the pair had shared their meetings 2-2, the last two to the Russian in Masters 1000 clashes in 2018 and 2019.

Zverev broke in game three of the opening set, then saved a break point in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead.

Serving at 3-5, Khachanov wasted two game points, saved one set point, but couldn’t escape a second.

Zverev was ahead 6-3.


Set two was one way traffic, Zverev breaking in both the second and fourth games. Khachanov finally put a score on the board in the sixth game forcing the German to serve for the gold.

At 5-1, Zverev came back from 0-30 to win four straight points and the gold medal 6-3 6-1.


Bronze medal:


Pablo Carreno Busta (6) (Spain) defeated Novak Djokovic (1) (Serbia) 6-4 6-7(6) 6-3
