Gold medal:

Belinda Bencic (9) (Switzerland) defeated Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) 7-5 2-6 6-3

The pair had met once before, in Miami this year, with Vondrousova successful in three sets.

The first set saw the players share four service breaks in the first six games.

Bencic saved two break points to lead 4-3, and both were taken to deuce before holding serve in games ten and eleven.

However, Bencic clinched the set when Vondrousova failed at the line serving at 5-6.

Set two began with a lengthy game including four deuces and Bencic saving a break point. However the ninth seed couldn’t keep out a second, and Vondrousova converted.

Another break opportunity presented itself to the Czech player in the fifth game, and again she capitalised. Bencic was unable to bridge the gap of a double break, and Vondrousova levelled the match at 5-7 6-2.

In similar fashion to set one, there were four service breaks in the first five games, and once more Bencic led 4-3 with games on serve.

This time the Swiss player pounced, breaking to love, and finding herself one game away from gold.

Serving for gold, Bencic was down 15-40, but saved those two break points. Vondrousova saved a match point, then saw another break point evaporate, before finally Bencic won with her second match point.

Belinda Bencic, winning 7-5 2-6 6-3, became Switzerland’s first female gold medalist in tennis, and followed compatriots Marc Rosset (gold medal Men’s Singles Barcelona 1992) and Stan Wawrinka / Roger Federer (gold medal Men’s Doubles Beijing 2008).

Bronze medal:

Elina Svitolina (4) (Ukraine) defeated Elena Rybakina (15) (Kazakhstan) 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4
