WTA - Chicago 1R start

First round commenced in Chicago.

2021 Chicago Women’s Open a WTA 250 tournament, on Hard, in Chicago, Illinois, USA, 22-28 August 2021.
No defending champion:
This is a new tournament on the WTA calendar.

Second seed Camila Giorgi withdrew after the main draw was published and was replaced by lucky loser Clara Burel
Alizé Cornet was instated as ninth seed and moved in the draw to the place previously occupied by Giorgi.
For a strange reason, Burel wasn’t placed in the spot vacated by Cornet. Instead, it was filled by qualifier Aldila Sutjiadi.
Burel was placed in the the spot originally reserved for a qualifier and will play top seed Elina Svitolina.

First round results:
- Wildcard Francoise Abanda defeated Danka Kovinic 6-4 6-2
- Rebecca Peterson led Marie Bouzkova 7-6(9) 0-1 when rain stopped play
- Marta Kostyuk (8) defeated wildcard Katherine Sebov 6-0 6-3
- Kaia Kanepi defeated Anhelina Kalinina 3-6 6-2 7-5
- Varvara Gracheva defeated Tamara Zidansek (4) 6-3 1-6 6-2
- Jasmine Paolini defeated Misaki Doi 6-4 6-2
