Final:
Karolina Pliskova (4) (Czech Republic) v Camila Giorgi (Italy)
In their eight previous meetings, Pliskova had won five times, but Giorgi prevailed in the most recent two, bit hard this year, including at the Tokyo Olympics.
In clash number nine, Pliskova saved two break points in game three of the opening set, and Giorgi saved one in the sixth game, which left the pair at 3-3.
In the seventh game, Pliskova led 40-15, but couldn’t convert the two game points. In fact she was forced to save a break point before wasting three more game points. Giorgi’s forehand returns were troubling the fourth seed, and she converted a second break point, then consolidated to lead 5-3.
Serving to stay in the set, Pliskova was down 15-40, and the fourth seed was only able to save one set point, the Italian claiming the set 6-3.
The players exchanged service breaks in the fifth and sixth games of set two, double faults the major issue.
Things then settled with neither taken to deuce until Pliskova was serving at 5-6.
A double fault and forehand errors from the Czech racquet helped Giorgi to a couple of championship points, and the unseeded Italian used the second of these to close out the match.
Camila Giorgi won the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, and in straight sets 6-3 7-5, her third career WTA title from nine finals, and by far her biggest.
It was the first since Linz in October 2018.
Giorgi will climb in the rankings 37 places to #34, not far from her career high of #26, achieved after the Linz success.
