Petkovic’s 1st title in six years

Final in Cluj-Napoca.

2021 Winners Open a WTA 250 tournament, on Clay, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 2-8 August 2021.
No defending champion:
This is a new tournament on the WTA calendar.

Final:

Mayar Sherif (Egypt) v Andrea Petkovic (2) (Germany)

For Sherif this was the first WTA final experienced by an Egyptian, and for Petrovic her second final in a month (after a six year drought).

The pair hadn’t met in a match before, and it would prove to be a disappointing first meeting for Sherif, as Petkovic from the outset dominated with her consistency of winning.ground strokes.

Petkovic converted two of four break points in the first set, and faced none herself, racing to a 5-0 lead before Sherif avoided a complete whitewash by holding serve to love in game six.

Petkovic served it out with ease 6-1, forcing an error on her first set point.

Set two was just as convincing - Sherif saved two break points in the opening game and held serve for 1-0. Petkovic then won the next six games to win the match, a forehand winner sealing it 6-1 6-1.

A seventh career title for Petkovic from 13 finals, and her first since Antwerp in February 2015.
