Event held last year in New York City due to COVID-19
Defending champion:
Victoria Azarenka who received a walkover from wildcard Naomi Osaka (4) in the final.
The following players withdrew after entering but before the main draw was published:
- Sofia Kenin replaced by Magda Linette
- Serena Williams replaced by Dayana Yastremska
Ashleigh Barty, world number 1, is top seed.
The other 15 seeds are all in the top 17
The top eight seeds have first round byes.
