Pliskova d Sabalenka to make Wimbledon final

Wimbledon 2021 - Day Ten Women’s Singles: semi finals

Wimbledon a Grand Slam tournament, on Grass, in London, United Kingdom, 28 June - 11 July 2021.
Event not held last year due to COVID-19.

2019 champion (not defending):
Simona Halep (7) who defeated Serena Williams (11) 6-2 6-2

Semi final:

Karolina Pliskova (8) (Czech Republic) v Aryna Sabalenka (2) (Belarus)

Third meeting between the pair, Sabalenka winning both previous.

Sabalenka opened with an ace, and held to love.

The first four games went with serve and neither player was taken to deuce.

Game five was more difficult, Sabalenka needing to save two break points, the first thanks to a big serve and the second through a lucky net cord.

Sabalenka saved two more break points in her next service game, the second of those with an ace.

She held once more to lead 4-3.

A stunning Sabalenka forehand return winner was insufficient to prevent Pliskova from levelling at 4-4, and the Belarusian was just as ruthless in the following game, the serve taking her closer to a first set grab.

A love game from Pliskova and 5-5.

Four break chances for Pliskova disappeared in the eleventh game, making a total of eight that Sabalenka had saved to that point of the match.

Wasting all those chances would prove fatal for Pliskova as Sabalenka took full toll in the twelfth game, converting the very first break point afforded her in the match. In fact it was also a set point, and the second seed virtually stole the set 7-5.

The second set was like the first - no break points until the fifth game. Here, Pliskova finally took advantage of a 0-40 situation, and broke the Sabalenka serve. No more break chances for the set, and Pliskova served it out 6-4 to level proceedings.

Pliskova continued her run, breaking Sabalenka in the opening game of the decider and consolidating with a love game.

Sabalenka followed with a love game also, but remained a break down at 1-2.

No more break chances, not even a deuce, and Karolina Pliskova served out the match 5-7 6-4 6-4 to join Ash Barty in the Wimbledon final.
