Djokovic had won the pairs six previous meetings.

Shapovalov broke the top seed in the third game. For his part the Canadian was down 15-30 in the second game, then won an incredible 15 straight  points on his serve.
Shapovalov was serving for the set at 5-4 when Djokovic broke the sequence and won a point against the serve. He went further and converted the second of two break points to level at 5-5.
In the eventual tie break, five of the first six points went against serve, leaving Djokovic ahead 4-2.
At 3-6, Shapovalov double faulted and Djokovic won the set 7-6(3).

In set two, Djokovic saved three break points in game four and two more in game six. Shapovalov surrendered only three points in his first five service games. Still, Djokovic was able to break the Canadian serve just when it mattered, in the eleventh game, and comfortably served out the set 7-5.

In set three, both saved three break points early, then Shapovalov saved two in game seven.
Djokovic waited until the eleventh game, as he did in set two, and converted the second of two break points to lead 6-5.
