Semi final:
Ashleigh Barty (1) (Australia) v Angelique Kerber (25) (Germany)
Fifth meeting between the pair.
Barty saved two break points in the opening game then converted a break point in Kerber’s initial service attempt with a forehand winner to lead 2-0.
The break was consolidated after a visit to deuce, more forehand winners included.
Errors from the German racquet gave Barty another break chance but Kerber survived, sealing the game with a smash to open her account.
Two aces surrounded a double fault, allowing Barty to move ahead 4-1. Kerber held well, winners from both sides helping.
Barty’s love game took her to within a game of securing the first set.
Serving for it at 5-3 and 30-30, Barty threw in a double fault. She saved the break point with attacking tennis, and won the set with a finishing ace. 6-3.
Set two began differently, with Kerber serving well, and breaking the Australian serve in game two, assisted in no small part by poor choices by Barty when in control of the first two points.
Barty could have broken back in game five, but Kerber saved the pair of break chances on offer.
This time, Kerber served for the set at 5-3, but she wasn’t able to clinch it, broken to love, and games were back on serve, Kerber still ahead 5-4.
A second straight love game saw the scores level at 5-5.
The eventual tie break was one way traffic for six points, all going to Barty. She couldn’t win it on her next serve, or on Kerber’s next two.
However, the fourth match point was converted and the top seed won her way into the final, triumphant 6-3 7-6(3).
