Wimbledon 2021 - Day Eleven Men’s Singles: semi finals.
Wimbledon - a Grand Slam tournament, on Grass, in London, United Kingdom, 28 June - 11 July 2021.
Event not held last year due to COVID-19.
Defending champion (2019):
Novak Djokovic (1) who defeated Roger Federer (2) 7-6(5) 1-6 7-6(4) 4-6 13-12 (3)
Semi final:
Matteo Berrettini (7) (Italy) v Hubert Hurkacz (14) (Poland)
Four of the first six games were won on serve to love, while Hurkacz saved three break points in game three and Berrettini saved one in game six.
Beyond that it was all Berrettini, who broke the Polish serve twice to take the opening set 6-3.
Set two saw Berrettini win 16 of the first 19 points to lead 4-0, on the way to a complete whitewash 6-0.
Set three was finally a contest, and a servers delight. For nine games, only nine points went against the serve.
At 4-5, however, Hurkacz, serving to stay in the match, was taken to deuce twice before holding for 5-5.
Another Italian love game, and quickly Hurkacz was again under the microscope.
At 30-15 Hurkacz netted a backhand, and at 40-30, netted a forehand. He survived and forced a tie break.
Outplayed in the tiebreak, Berrettini saw his dominance reduced, and Hurkacz won the third set 7-6(3).
Berrettini didn’t let the third set loss affect him and he broke the Hurkacz serve immediately in the fourth.
Hurkacz now needed to break the Italian serve at least once, a feat not done all match.
He couldn’t do this, and although Hurkacz saved one match point when serving at 3-5, Berrettini converted the next chance he had when serving for the match.
Matteo Berrettini won his way into the Wimbledon final 6-3 6-0 6-7(3) 6-4.
