Ruud takes out Geneva final

Final in Geneva.

2021 Gonet Geneva Open an ATP 250 tournament, on Clay, in Geneva, Switzerland, 15-22 May 2021.
Event not held last year due to COVID-19

2019 champion (not defending):
Alexander Zverev (1) who defeated Nicolas Jarry 6-3 3-6 7-6(8)

Final:

Casper Ruud (3) (Norway) v Denis Shapovalov (2) (Canada)

Neither player was taken to deuce in the first set of the final, the first meeting between the pair.

However, in the tie break, the first two points went against the serve.

At 2-3, Shapovalov lost both points on his serve, and Ruud had four set points serving at 6-2.

Shapovalov saved all of those, but couldn’t do the same when serving at 6-7, and the set was Ruud’s 7-6(6).

In set two, while Ruud continued to hold serve comfortably, Shapovalov was taken to deuce in game three, and needed to save four break points in game five. He couldn’t save a fifth and Ruud led 3-2. A love game consolidated the break.

No more breaks and Ruud served out the match 7-6(6) 6-4.

This was the second title from four finals for Casper Ruud, and he moves back up to his equal career high ranking of #16.
