Ruud wins Argentina Open

Final day in Buenos Aires.

2022 Argentina Open an ATP 250 tournament, on Clay, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 7-13 February 2022.
Event held last year from 1-7 March 2021.

Defending champion:
Diego Schwartzman (1) who defeated qualifier Francisco Cerundolo 6-1 6-2


Final:


Casper Ruud (1) (Norway) v Diego Schwartzman (2) (Argentina)


Schwartzman led the head to head 5-2 before this final, and won the most recent contest - Indian Wells round of sixteen, October 2021.

In his 13th final, Schwartzman was aiming to win his fifth title, his most recent in Argentina, March 2021.

Ruud, in his 9th final, was looking for a 7th title, the San Diego Open in October 2021 the latest.


Schwartzman saved two break points in the second game of set one, and another in the fourth game, but held serve both times.

Ruud saved a couple of break points in the seventh game, and also held on.

Schwartzman, when serving to stay in the set at 4-5, survived a set point, and the pair were stuck at 5-5.


In the very next game it was Ruud the first to drop serve, giving Schwartzman the chance to serve out the set, which he did with a love game.

7-5.


Schwartzman saved four break points in the second game of set two, but he was helpless in the sixth game.

When serving at 2-5 to stay in the set, Schwartzman was broken again, and Ruud levelled the match at 5-7 6-2.


Serve was broken in games 2, 3, and 4 of the decider, leaving Ruud ahead 3-1. 

The top seed had Schwartzman down 0-40 in the sixth game, but the Argentine saved all those three break points.

Schwartzman saved a fourth as well, held serve,and avoided going down a double break. He trailed 2-4.


No more breaks and Casper Ruud served the match out 5-7 6-2 6-3 to win the Argentina Open.
