This was the first ATP tour meeting between the two players.
In his second final Alcaraz was looking for his second title, his first coming in Croatia, July 2021.
In his 14th final, Schwartzman was looking for a fifth title, his most recent the Argentina Open in March 2021.
Schwartzman served first, and after he held, the pair exchanged breaks of serve in the next two games.
2-1 to the Argentine.
No trouble on serve for the next five games - neither was even taken to deuce.
Alcaraz however broke in the ninth game and would serve for the set at 5-4.
The Spaniard served it out to take a 6-4 lead.
Alcaraz, riding the momentum, broke Schwartzman in the opening game of set two.
Schwartzman snapped a run of four games from Alcaraz by breaking back immediately.
Unfazed, Alcaraz broke again and led by a set and a break 2-1.
Alcaraz broke again in the fifth for a commanding 4-1 advantage.
No more breaks and Carlos Alcaraz served out the match 6-4 6-2 to claim the Rio Open title.
