Jan-Lennard Struff (Germany) v Frances Tiafoe (3) (USA)
These two played each other twice previously with one win each.
Tiafoe won a second round match in Antwerp in October 2019.
Struff won a first round Roland Garros match in 2020.
Third career final for Struff, hoping for his debut victory.
Tiafoe aiming for a second title this year, following his Houston victory in April.
Through six games of the opening set neither player was taken to deuce.
Then Tiafoe was broken in the seventh game and Struff led 4-3.
No more deuces and Struff served out the set 6-4.
No deuces in set two for nine games.
Struff served to stay in the set at 4-5.
He saved three set points in a five deuce game before holding for 5-5.
A tie break was required, and Tiafoe dominated, taking it and the set 7-6(1).
The decider had no service breaks and another tie break would determine the result.
This was close, with both players surrendering two points on their serve within the first six points.
It was 3-3.
Thereafter all points went with serve until 8-8. Tiafoe had saved a match point, Struff had saved two.
Struff lost the point on his serve at 8-8, and Tiafoe capitalised, taking the tie break and the match.
Tiafoe won 4-6 7-6(1) 7-6(8), claiming his third career title, second this year.
He now moves into the top ten at #10, a career high.
