Djokovic won all four previous matches between the players, the most recent being the final of the 2022 ATP Finals in Turin.
In the second game of set one, there were five deuces and Djokovic saved two break points.
He couldn’t save a third, and Ruud broke to lead 2-0.
Djokovic broke back in the seventh game and Ruud led 4-3.
In the following game Djokovic saved a break point before holding, and scores were level at 4-4.
Ruud saved a break point in the ninth game, and held for 5-4.
From 0-30, Djokovic won the next four points and it was 5-5.
The required tie break was all Djokovic and he won the set 7-6(1).
Ruud saved three break points in the second game of set two, but couldn’t save a fourth, and Djokovic led 2-0.
Serving at 2-5 to stay in the set, Ruud saved two set points before holding.
Djokovic served a love game to take the set 6-3.
Ruud saved a break point in game three of set three and held serve.
No more break points faced by either player until Ruud served at 5-5.
Djokovic broke to love.
The Serbian champ served out the match 7-6(1) 6-3 7-5 to win his third Roland Garros title and 23rd major.
He is half way to a potential Grand Slam in 2023.
