Alcaraz won the only previous match between the players - semi final in Madrid, May last year.
Djokovic broke Alcaraz in the fourth game of set one with great returns and smart net play to lead 3-1.
He consolidated for 4-1.
In the seventh game, Djokovic survived four deuces and saved three break points before holding for 5-2.
Alcaraz saveda set point when serving at 2-5, and had a chance to break back in the following game.
However Djokovic saved the break point and served out the set 6-3.
Neither player was taken to deuce in set two until the eighth game when Alcaraz broke the Djokovic serve and led 5-3.
Serving for the set, Alcaraz was broken back, but still led 5-4.
Down 0-40, Djokovic saved all three set points and eventually held serve for 5-5.
Alcaraz saved a break point in the eleventh game and then broke Djokovic to love, taking the set 7-5.
Djokovic broke Alcaraz in the third game of set three with Alcaraz cramping.
After that it was all Djokovic and he won the set 6-1.
Djokovic saved two break points in the opening game of set four, then broke Alcaraz for 2-0.
Djokovic broke again to lead 4-0, and consolidated to be one game away from victory.
Alcaraz held serve, forcing Djokovic to serve for the match.
Novak Djokovic served his way into the final, winning 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1.
