Ruud wins - defends Geneva trophy

Final day in Geneva.

2022 Gonet Geneva Open, an ATP 250 tournament, on Clayin Geneva, Switzerland, 15-21 May 2022.

Defending champion:
Casper Ruud (3) who defeated Denis Shapovalov (2) 7-6(6) 6-4

Final:

Joao Sousa (Portugal) v Casper Ruud (2) (Norway)

Ruud had won both previous meetings between the pair, although they were in 2019, and not of much relevance.

Before this tournament, Sousa had not been posting great results. Since his trophy win in Pune in February, just one ATP tour main draw win.
Ruud however had won the Argentina Open and been a finalist in Miami this year.

In set one Ruud achieved the early break in game three. He maintained the break comfortably until the eighth game where he needed to save four break points before holding serve.
Serving at 3-5 to stay in the set, Sousa saved three set points and held on for 4-5.

Serving for the set, Ruud was broken, and two games later the players were in a tie break.

Sousa lost points on two of his serves, leaving Ruud ahead 6-2 with four set points.
One was saved but Ruud won the set 7-6(3).

Sousa broke Ruud in the fifth game of set two, and that was the only break of serve for the set.
Sousa served out the set to love 6-4.

In the decider Sousa once again broke Ruud in game five.
However Ruud broke back this time in the tenth game. 5-5.

Serving at 5-6 to stay in the match, Sousa survived four deuces, saved two match points and forced a tie break.
Ruud swept all before him, winning the first six points in the tie break and taking the match 7-6(3) 4-6 7-6(1).

Casper Ruud successfully defended his Geneva title.
