Final day in Madrid.
2022 Mutua Madrid Open - an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Clay, in Madrid, Spain, 1-8 May 2022.
Defending champion:
Alexander Zverev (5) who defeated Matteo Berrettini (8) 6-7(8) 6-4 6-3
Final:
Carlos Alcaraz (7) (Spain) v Alexander Zverev (2) (Germany)
Zverev won both previous matches between the pair, each played in 2021, the more recent being a semi final in Vienna in October.
In his short career, Alcaraz was in his fifth final, attempting to win his fifth title and second Masters 1000 trophy.
Already he had taken out the #1 and #3 seeds, Djokovic and Nadal. Now he needed to overcome the defending champion and #2 seed.
Zverev was in his 30th final, aiming for a 20th title and sixth Masters 1000 trophy.
Zverev saved a break point in the fourth game, but was broken to love in the sixth.
Alcaraz didn't face a break point in the first set, and included two service games to love as he reached 5-2.
Zverev delivered a love game of his own, forcing Alcaraz to serve for the set, which he did via another love game.
6-3 to the Spanish teenager.
Set two was more dominant for Alcaraz - again he didn’t face a break point.
For Zverev, though, it was a serving nightmare. He was broken to love in the third game, and dropped serve in the fifth.
The defending champ was then down 1-5 after Alcaraz consolidated with a love game.
Serving to keep the contest going, Zverev found himself at 0-40 looking three championship points in the face.
To his credit he saved all of those, but he was unable to brush a fourth aside, and the match ended.
Carlos Alcaraz demolished Alexander Zverev 6-3 6-1 to win the Mutua Madrid Open.
The victory - fourth of the year - takes Alcaraz to within 70 points of Nadal in the 2022 ATP Race to Turin.
