Final day in Belgrade.
2022 Serbia Open - an ATP 250 tournament, on Clay, in Belgrade, Serbia, 18-24 April 2022.
Defending champion:
Aslan Karatsev (3) who defeated Novak Djokovic (1) 7-5 4-6 6-4
Final:
Novak Djokovic (1) (Serbia) v Andrey Rublev (2)
The pair had met once before, in the round robin stages of the 2021 ATP Finals. Djokovic won in straight sets.
In his sixteenth final, Rublev was attempting to win his eleventh title. He’d already won twice in 2022, both in February, Marseille and Dubai.
Djokovic was trying for his first title of the year.
Rublev saved a break point in the fourth game, then broke Djokovic to love for a 3-2 lead in set one.
Djokovic saved two break points in game seven, but couldn’t save a third, and Rublev extended his advantage to 5-2.
The second seed served out the set 6-2.
The pair exchanged service breaks in games two and three of set two before settling in and comfortably holding for the next six games.
At 4-5, Rublev struggled to hold, wasting five game points and saving two points. However he did hold, as did Djokovic in the eleventh game (after saving a break point).
A tie break was required, and Djokovic controlled it, eventually winning the set 7-6(4).
Set three began with Djokovic holding two break points. Rublev saved them, won the opening game, and proceeded to win the next five as well.
Andrey Rublev won the Serbia Open 6-2 6-7(4) 6-0.
