Bencic wins Charleston Open

Final day in Charleston.

2022 Credit One Charleston Open a WTA 500 tournament, on Green Clayin Charleston, South Carolina, USA, 2-10 April 2022.

2021 champion (not defending):
Veronika Kudermetova (15) who defeated Danka Kovinic 6-4 6-2

Final:

Ons Jabeur (4) (Tunisia) v Belinda Bencic (10) (Switzerland)

In the only prior meeting between the pair, Bencic won in straight sets - round of sixteen, Madrid, May 2021.

Before this, Jabeur had won a single title from her four finals - Birmingham, June 2021.
Bencic had won five titles from thirteen finals, the most recent the Tokyo Olympics in July 2021.

In set one Bencic won 16 of 20 points on her own serve, and broke the Jabeur serve twice.
The set was done 6-1 in just over half an hour.

Set two was where the match began. Service breaks were exchanged in the opening two games.
Breaks were exchanged again in games six and seven.

Jabeur saved two break points in the eleventh game before taking a 6-5 lead.
Bencic served to stay in the set, but was broken and Jabeur levelled things at 1-6 7-5.

The first three games of the decider saw breaks of serve, two of them to Bencic who led 2-1.
Jabeur broke serve in the sixth game to draw level at 3-3.

Bencic struck back immediately, converting the second break chance on offer.

Serving at 3-5, Jabeur led 40-15, but lost the next three points to give Bencic match point. 
It was saved. Jabeur held on and forced Bencic to serve for it.

A love game from the Swiss number one gave her the match.

Belinda Bencic won the Charleston Open 6-1 5-7 6-4.
