Qualifier Potapova wins Istanbul

Final day in Istanbul.

2022 TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championship Istanbul a WTA 250 tournament, on Clayin Istanbul, Turkey, 18-24 April 2022.

Defending champion:
Sorana Cirstea who defeated wildcard Elise Mertens (1) 6-1 7-6(3)

Final:

Qualifier Anastasia Potapova v Veronika Kudermetova (3)

In the one match match previously played between the pair, Kudermetova won in three sets - quarter final, Melbourne Summer Set 1, January 2022.

Kudermetova was aiming to win her second title from her fifth final. Her one title came in Charleston in April 2021, and her latest final appearance was in Dubai in February this year.
Potapova had yet to win a title, but made two finals in 2018, the second in Tashkent in September of that year.

Potapova faced break points in both her opening two service games - she held on in the first, but was broken in the second.
Kudermetova led 2-1. The third seed saved two break points before holding for 3-1, but was broken back in the sixth game.
Potapova broke again to lead 5-3, and served out the first set 6-3.

In set two, Kudermetova broke Potapova in the fourth game, but that was the only game she was able to collect.
Potapova broke Kudermetova all four times, took the set 6-1 and the match 6-3 6-1.

The first WTA title for Anastasia Potapova was extra special, considering she had to win through qualifying to make the main draw.
