Roland Garros 2020 - Women’s Singles Final

Day Fourteen of Roland Garros 2020 - Women’s Final.

2019 champion (not defending):

Ashleigh Barty (8) who defeated Markéta Vondroušová 6-1 6-3

Final

Iga Swiatek (Poland) v Sofia Kenin (4) (USA)

In their first ever WTA meeting, Swiatek sprinted to a 3-0 lead, dropping just one point on serve, and breaking Kenin with the first chance.
Kenin responded in kind, and it was soon 3-3. In a sixteen point eighth game, Swiatek used the third of three break points to edge ahead 5-3, but couldn’t convert a set point in the following game, and Kenin broke back for 4-5.
Swiatek regrouped and for the third time cracked the American delivery and took the set 6-4.
Kenin opened set two by breaking Swiatek, but thereafter was in strife. Swiatek broke back immediately, then held for 2-1, at which point Kenin took a medical time out.
The time out was of no benefit to the fourth seed, with the remaining games all going in Poland’s direction.
Iga Swiatek claimed her first tour title in the biggest way possible by winning a major, defeating Kenin 6-4 6-1.
She becomes the first Grand Slam singles title winner from Poland, and improves her ranking from 54 to 17.
