Roland Garros 2020 - Men’s Singles Semi Finals

Day Thirteen of Roland Garros 2020 - men’s semi final day.

2019 champion:

Rafael Nadal (2) who defeated Dominic Thiem (4) 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1

Semi finals

Novak Djokovic (1) v Stefanos Tsitsipas (5)

Djokovic started ignominiously and trailed 0-40 in the opening game, but saved the situation which involved four break points. Salt was rubbed into the Tsitsipas wound when Djokovic broke the Greek serve in the following game.
The world #1 bypassed another break point to lead 5-2, and finally took the set after initially wasting a 40-0 lead when serving for it.
In the longest game of set two, Djokovic saved two break points to level at 1-1, and after that wasn’t threatened at the line. Tsitsipas however, was broken twice, and a love game saw Djokovic wrap up the set 6-2.
Djokovic in set three again struggled to level at 1-1, but from there lost just one point on serve to reach 4-4. Then the crucial break came, leaving the top seed serving for the match at 5-4.
After himself saving a break point, Djokovic saw Tsitsipas save a match point, then eventually convert the third break point of the game.
Serving at 5-6, now to stay in the set, Djokovic stumbled once more, failing to survive the second of two set points. Tsitsipas was back in the contest.
Set four had break points in seven of the ten games, including all of those where Tsitsipas was serving. He was broken once, but saved 9 break points in his other four forays from the line.
Djokovic, when serving at 4-5, had a 40-15 lead, but frittered away the next four points to lose the set. Amazingly this match was going the distance.
Tsitsipas survived a break point in the opening game of the decider, but Djokovic won the next six games.
Novak Djokovic won his semi final, but it took two sets longer than it seemed it would, 6-3 6-2 5-7 4-6 6-1

Diego Schwartzman (12) v Rafael Nadal (2)

Nadal saved two break points in the lengthy opening game, then three service breaks occurred. Nadal led 4-1 after surviving another break point, and then cruised to a first set win, taking it on his third set point.
The defending champion didn’t face a break point in set two, but Schwartzman was broken in the third game and again when serving at 3-5 to stay in the set.
In set three, service breaks were exchanged from games 4 to 7, and Schwartzman had three chances to break for a 6-5 lead. Nadal avoided the crisis, and in the tie break smashed the Argentine hopes, not losing a point.
Rafael Nadal won the encounter 6-3 6-3 7-6(0) to advance to another Roland Garros final.

The final will be between the two best - Novak Djokovic (1) v Rafael Nadal (2).
