Rublev wins Monte Carlo Masters

Final day in Monte Carlo.

2023 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, on Clay, in Monte Carlo, Monaco, 9-16 April 2023.

Defending champion:
Stefanos Tsitsipas (3) who defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-3 7-6(3)

Final:

Holger Rune (6) (Denmark) v Andrey Rublev (5) (Russia)

The players had met twice before, winning once each.
Rublev won the more recent match - round of sixteen at this year’s Australian Open.

In the first set, both players saved break points in early games, but held serve.
Rune broke serve in the sixth game, but Rublev broke back immediately and trailed 3-4.

Serving at 5-6, Rublev was broken a second time and Rune took the set 7-5.

Rublev opened set two by breaking the Rune serve.
He saved two break points in the third game to maintain the break.
However, Rune broke back in the fourth game to level at 2-2.

Rublev won sixteen of the next twenty points to take the set 6-2.

Rune grabbed a 3-0 lead in the decider, including the vital service break in game two.
Serving at 3-1, Rune saved two break points, the first with a winning forehand, the second with an ace.
The lead now 4-1.

Rune had a break point to go up 5-1. Instead, Rublev saved the situation, held for 2-4, then broke the Rune serve next game.
Rublev held serve to level at 4-4.

Serving at 5-5 Rune was broken, the final point a double fault.

Rublev served for the match at 6-5.
Rune netted a backhand. 15-0. Backhand return netted. 30-0. Forehand return wide. Three match points.
Rublev netted a backhand. 40-15

An ace finished the match and Andrey Rublev was the victor 5-7 6-2 7-5.

It was title number 13 for Rublev, and first at Masters 1000 level.
