Semi final match ups

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Karolina Muchova

Wildcard Belinda Bencic (3) v Kristina Mladenovic

The defeat for Bertens is shattering as it leaves her in ninth place, just 65 points behind Serena Williams in the WTA Race to Shenzhen. Only the top eight are eligible to play the WTA Finals in the Chinese city starting 27 October and Bertens has blown her chance of being there.

However, Williams is not yet safe while Bencic remains alive in Moscow.

The Swiss #1 lies 10th in the WTA Race, 100 points adrift of Williams, but if she wins her semi final. Bencic will leapfrog both Bertens and Williams into eighth spot.

Should she win the tournament, Bencic will enter Shenzhen at #7, having overtaken Elina Svitolina.

Kristina Mladenovic continues to be Serena’s best friend. She dealt with Bertens, next it is Bencic.
