Zverev lost a big opportunity to leave a gap between him and a group of others in the ATP Race to London.
The German sits in the final eighth position, but is only marginally ahead of Goffin, Berrettini, Nishikori, and Monfils. He could have passed Bautista Agut into seventh position with victory over Tsitsipas, the Beijing title would have challenged the Greek player for position six.

As it turns out, for the Shanghai Masters, Zverev is drawn to play Goffin in the round of sixteen in the Federer section; so are Bautista Agut and Berrettini; Monfils and Tsitsipas are drawn to meet in the round of sixteen in the Djokovic section. Nishikori is not contesting the event.
