Wimbledon Day 6 - Halep + S Zverev upset

Day Six of Wimbledon 2018 and the third round was completed.

The round of sixteen has, in my memory, never seen such a depletion of seeded players in both the men’s and women’s draws - not just the lower seeds either.

There will be a rest day tomorrow but the following players, seeded to be in the final 16, won’t be needing a rest because they won’t be seeing action in the second week of singles.

Men’s

Marin Cilic (3)

Sascha Zverev (4)

Lost his third round match today to Ernests Gulbis, ranked 138 from Latvia, but once a top ten player

Grigor Dimitrov (6)

Dominic Thiem (7)

David Goffin (10)

Sam Querrey (11)

Diego Schwartzman (14)

Nick Kyrgios (15)

Lost his third round match today to Kei Nishikori (24)

Borna Coric (16)

Women’s

Simona Halep (1)

Lost her third round match today to Su-Wei Hsieh

Caroline Wozniacki (2)

Garbiñe Muguruza (3)

Sloane Stephens (4)

Elina Svitolina (5)

Caroline Garcia (6)

Petra Kvitová (8)

Venus Williams (9)

Madison Keys (10)

Elise Mertens (15)

Lost her third round match today to Dominika Cibulková

CoCo Vandeweghe (16)

So only 12 of the 32 players drawn to be the crowd pleasers next week will do so.

The path has been made potentially a lot easier for Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Serena Williams and Karolina Pliskova.

They should have been playing

Borna Coric

Diego Schwartzman

Dominic Thiem

Madison Keys

Venus Williams

respectively

The round of sixteen matches scheduled for week two are:
