Wimbledon Day 3 - rain comes Wozniacki goes

Rain came to 2018 Wimbledon on Day 3 of the championships, but not before Caroline Wozniacki (2) became another high profile seed to leave the proceedings, a victim of Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 1-6 7-5.

Half of the reigning ladies doubles championship team, Ekaterina led in the final set 5-2 and served for the match, but was broken, then served again at 5-4 and wasted four match points.

At 5-5, Makarova regained her composure, won her serve, and created three more match points.  Converting one of these, the Russian avoided the need to serve again and won a third round berth where she will play Lucie Safarova.  Safarova beat Aga Radwanska 7-5 6-4.

Wozniacki has never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon, and that remains her pain.  Simona Halep will still be world number one after the championships, irrespective of her efforts from here.

The way has been made clearer for the Williams sisters and Karolina Pliskova (7) with Wozniacki’s departure.

Serena (25) won easily against Viktoriya Tomova 6-1 6-4.

Venus (9), for the second match in succession, dropped the opening set only to then display her grass court class, defeating Alexandra Dulgheru 4-6 6-0 6-1.

Pliskova was brilliant throughout in her victory over former world number one Vika Azarenka 6-3 6-3, as a result finding her first ever third round Wimbledon berth.
