Wimbledon Day 5 - three US seeds gone

Day Five at Wimbledon 2018 saw a lot of doubles matches but amongst those were third round singles battles in both the top half of the men’s draw and the bottom half of the ladies draw.

First, the upsets, and the remaining top ten ladies seeds have been reduced to just Simona Halep (1) and Karolina Pliskova (7).

Venus Williams (9) was taken to three sets for the third successive match, but this time Kiki Bertens (20) was not going to let the five time champ escape with victory.  The Dutch player claimed her first ever round of sixteen spot at Wimbledon, winning 6-2 6-7(5) 8-6.  Her previous best showing here was a third round in 2016.

And Kiki will have Karolina Pliskova (7) to play in the next round, after the Czech former world number one was tested hard by Mihaela Buzarnescu (29), before winning 3-6 7-6(3) 6-1

Madison Keys (10) was the other top seed to say farewell to the Wimbledon grass, and give Americans another reason to sigh. Madison had her chances squashed when beaten by a resurgent Evgeniya Rodina, ranked 120 coming into the tournament, 7-5 5-7 6-4.

Evgeniya has earned a match in the fourth round with none other than Serena Williams who played her best tennis of the tournament when defeating Kiki Mladenovic in a high quality contest 7-5 7-6(2).

Other third matches decided include Roger Federer (1) defeating Jan-Lennard Struff and landing a fourth round tussle with Adrian Mannarino (22) who discarded Daniil Medvedev in a five set marathon.

Gaël Monfils knocked out last years semi finalist and eleventh seed Sam Querrey in four sets after dropping the first.  His reward is a fourth round meeting with Kevin Anderson (8) who eliminated Philipp Kohlschreiber (25) in straight sets.

Monfils previous best at Wimbledon was the third round on six occasions, including as far back as 2005, and last year.

The rest:

John Isner (9) defeated Radu Albot 6-3 6-3 6-4

He will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of sixteen

Stefanos Tsitsipas (31) defeated Thomas Fabbiano 6-2 6-1 6-4

This is only the fifth time Tsitsipas has played the main draw in a major, and the second time at Wimbledon, exiting in the opening round last year.  The second round at Roland Garros 2017 was his previous best at a major.

Mackenzie McDonald defeated Guido Pella 6-4 6-4 7-6(6)

McDonald is the first player to make the fourth round in his Wimbledon debut since Nick Kyrgios in 2014

His ranking will improve from 103 to at least 80 irrespective of results from here, the first time he has been in the top 100.

He will play the winner of Milos Raonic (13) and qualifier Dennis Novak.

The pair were stranded at a set apiece and on serve in the third when play was suspended through bad light.

Julia Goerges (13) defeated Barbora Strycova (23) 7-6(3) 3-6 10-8 in almost three hours

Goerges had made the third round in 2011 and 2012, but lost her opening round matches at Wimbledon from 2013 onwards.

2018 is her best effort yet at this Grand Slam event, equaling her best at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

She will play Donna Vekic in the round of sixteen

Donna Vekic defeated Yanina Wickmayer 7-6(2) 6-1

Vekic had previously never been past the second round.

Camila Giorgi defeated Katerina Siniakova 3-6 7-6(6) 6-2

She will play Ekaterina Makarova in the round of sixteen

Ekaterina Makarova defeated Lucie Safarova 4-6 6-4 6-1
