Zverev won the only previous match between the players - second round 2021 Roland Garros.
First final at this level for Safiullin.
In the final Safiullin saved a break point in game two of set one before holding serve.
No more break points faced until Safiullin served at 4-5 to stay in the set.
Down 0-40, Safiullin saved all three break points and held serve.
A tie.break was required.
Zverev lost the first point which was on his serve.
The next six points went with serve and Zverev trailed 2-5.
He had the next two serves, but lost both points and Safiullin won the set 7-6(2).
In the opening game of set two Safiullin saved three break points before holding serve.
He then broke Zverev to lead 2-0.
Zverev immediately broke back.
No more break points faced and a second tie break needed.
Zverev won the tie break and the set 7-6(5).
Zverev broke Safiullin in the fourth game of the decider to lead 3-1.
No more break points faced and Zverev served out the set and match 6-7(2) 7-6(5) 6-3.
Title number 21 for Alexander Zverev, and second for this year, following Hamburg In July.
